The position

Facilitate the Young Mob program activities at all three levels (introductory, intermediate and advanced) with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in schools in the Sydney and Hunter Valley regions.

Your role will be to help develop confidence and resilience in Aboriginal youth so they can confidently engage with the world and have strong connections within and across their cultures and communities.

You will facilitate a wide range of activities across the three levels of Young Mob and ten themes: identity, culture, strong spirit, yarning and storytelling, Indigenous resilience, social justice, health, goal-setting, community contribution and public speaking. You will also be required to participate in planning and facilitate extension activities including excursions, events, camps, exchange visits and road trips

This is a permanent part-time opportunity (4 days per week – 30hrs)

Your main duties and responsibilities:

  • Project Facilitation - Effective facilitation of Young Mob activities. This will include sharing stories of your own experience, personal and cultural identity. Facilitate a range of activities focused on the Young Mob themes, share cultural values, knowledge and skills, support young people to connect with their culture and community and be proud.
  • Contribute to program monitoring, evaluation, reporting and development - Contribute to the quality monitoring, learning and evaluation about progress towards project outcomes, including collection and review of project data as required, participate in and assist to prepare for reflection workshops held regularly with the project team.
  • Communication - Maintain communication with the Young Mob Facilitators Group, Young Mob Project Manager, schools and organisations and contribute as required to communication materials that enable reporting back to WVA and project supporters.
  • Contribute to a positive Young Mob project team - Positive relationships are maintained with colleagues within the Young Mob team and the Australia First Nations Program in general and active participation in regular one on one performance conversations held with Project Manager.

Who we’re looking for 

We are looking for someone who is a great team player with excellent interpersonal skills and who can create session plans, facilitate and drive them.

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Some experience in facilitating, mentoring, training, coaching, supervising or teaching young people 
  • Some experience in self-reflection 
  • Some knowledge of own culture and community
  • Good judgment to adapt facilitation to diverse needs and expectations of young people and changing circumstances 
  • Strong yarning and storytelling skills
  • Showing and receiving respect with young people
  • Adaptable and flexible to changing work locations and schedules
  • Cultural knowledge relevant to Young Mob themes
  • Familiarity with youth life issues in NSW
  • Completion of Year 12 Secondary School
