College overview
ANU has an international reputation for research and education relevant to the health and well-being of the population of Australia, as well as that of the developing world. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the School of Medicine and Psychology, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. These schools work together to deliver world-class research and education across the spectrum of medicine and health-related fields, working in partnership with the health sector at local, national, and international levels.

School overview
The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology (SMP) works to advance human health and wellbeing, enhancing the lives of individuals and strengthening communities, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples, in the ACT, NSW and beyond. By integrating the disciplines of medicine and psychology we aim to unlock the secrets of health and wellbeing, develop impactful therapies, solve national and international health problems, and lead impactful social change. To do this we conduct collaborative, courageous, transformational, and translational research, integrating perspectives, knowledge, and techniques from multiple disciplines. We develop excellent, adaptable, resilient, and innovative clinicians, academics and health care leaders of the future who work in partnership with their patients and colleagues to provide optimal care for individuals while strengthening the stem and society they work in. We partner with discovery-focussed and population researchers, healthcare providers, government, commercial and not for profit organisations and communities.

The ANU Rural Clinical School (RCS) forms part of the School of Medicine and Psychology and is an established program funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health under the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training Program (RHMTP). The RCS has five rural campuses across south-east New South Wales, and trains medical students in the region. The SENSW Regional Training Hub is led by the head of the RCS, and has the following objectives:

  • Improve the coordination of the stages of medical training to enable maximum exposure to rural medicine;
  • Identify students with rural intent and facilitate access to rural training opportunities;
  • Develop regional training capacity by supporting current supervisors of clinical training, assisting health services in obtaining accreditation for new training positions, and supporting local medical practitioners to become clinical supervisors;
  • Strengthen existing, and develop new, connections with key stakeholders to improve the continuity of training for medical students/trainees within their region; and
  • Identify regional medical workforce needs and use this information to prioritise activity.
