Purpose of the Position
Batchelor Institute is partners with John Hospkins Centre for Indigenous Health (US, First Nations Health Authority (British Columbia) and the University of Otago (NZ) on the Spirit Project. The project aims to address modifiable risk and protective factors for First Nations child well-being through implementation of the evidence based early childhood home visiting/On Country Family Spirit program and the development of intergenerational play spaces. Batchelor Institute is responsible for implementation of the SPIRIT Project in Australia and is partnering with a number of organisations in the Northern Territory and potentially other states to deliver projects and initiatives.

The SPIRIT Project Officer will provide project management and assist with implementation and monitoring of a range of projects and activities in Australia as part of the Lego funded SPIRIT Project

Duties

  • Provide project management for the implementation of the SPIRIT project in Australia.
  • Adapt Family Spirit curriculum to align with specific Central Australian early childhood support philosophies.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing a range of appropriate services, projects and activities funded as part of the SPIRIT project, based on knowledge of child development in a First Nations context.
  • Participate in consultations and meetings with communities, non-government organisations and others as required regarding the development and implementation of various SPIRIT projects.
  • Provide coordination, advice and support services to the Project lead and other senior staff for the SPIRIT Project, including secretariate support at internal and external meetings and forums including the local and global advisory forum.
  • Monitor progress of projects and prepare reports on the various SPIRIT projects for management, funders and others as required.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Undertake general administrative processes including invoice payment and record keeping.
Selection Criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities, and organisations.
  • First hand knowledge and experience of how knowledge is transmitted in Aboriginal communities and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum and resource development, particularly in an early childhood context.
  • Sound knowledge of child and family issues in a First Nations context.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to manage a number of projects concurrently with competing priorities, setting and achieving goals with minimal supervision and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability in a range of computer software, including databases, spreadsheets, email, internet, and other commonly used office administration software.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills including proficient written and oral communication which can be adapted to meet the needs of people from all educational levels.
  • Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.
