Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Provisional Fellow to join the Pain Management Team at RPA Hospital
What you will be doing:
This position is open to qualified candidates with a background in Anaesthesia, Medicine, Surgery, Rehabilitation Medicine or General Practice. You will be Involved in the chronic and acute pain inpatient service as well as the Outpatient pain service with appropriate degrees of independence. You will have the opportunity to enhance your skills in a chosen area, with support provided for research activities. Candidates for this position will engage in self-directed as well as work-directed learning of relevant principles and material.
This role has a focus on excellence in teaching and will offer you training toward a higher qualification in pain management, Faculty of Pain Medicine Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FFPMANZCA).
The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management
The Pain Service of RPAH, in which the successful applicant will work, offers comprehensive pain management delivery to a large tertiary referral hospital. The Acute Pain Service provides anaesthetic based supervision of advanced acute pain modalities, and the successful applicant will participate in acute pain rounds and assist with quality assurance and educational activities related to this service.
The Chronic Pain Service incorporates a broad multidisciplinary team managing inpatients and outpatients, plus group programs in an outpatient setting. The successful applicant will need to be able to work efficiently within these teams, and communicate well with other professionals within RPAH and the community.
The RPAH Chronic Pain Service has a long history of interventional pain management services, including implantation of pain management devices. The successful applicant should have technical skills appropriate to receive instruction in this field. RPAH also has a strong Palliative Medicine division, to which the Pain Management Service consults and supports with advanced pain management modalities and implantation services.

Royal Prince Alfred is the principal teaching hospital of the University of Sydney and offers speciality services from its main campus as well as from Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and Dame Edith Walker Hospitals. RPAH is one of Australia's leading hospitals, providing an extensive range of diagnostic and treatment services. Its specialities include cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, cancer, respiratory medicine, neurology, liver and kidney transplants.
RPA and Concord Hospitals share a training program, and each year 1 of the RPA Pain Fellows, and the Concord Pain Fellow, are seconded for 6 months between these 2 FPM accredited training sites.
The 2nd RPA Pain Fellow spends 12 months at RPA.

- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Trainees must be progressing signficantly toward completing their training in their primary specialties and be eligible to register as trainee with the Faculty of Pain Medicine ANZCA. Intention to present for fellowship examination of the Faculty of Pain Medicine Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
- Demonstrated advanced ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
- Demonstrated advanced communication skills, including the ability to convey, adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience.
- Demonstrated advanced organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Demonstrated advanced ability to remain calm and act constructively when faced with high pressure situations or unpredictable environments.
- Demonstrated previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training and commitment to the after-hours and on call roster.
