Job description

A life of freedom, opportunity and choice.

At Autism Queensland, you’ll work with people who are generous, caring, compassionate, and resilient. A team that never stops learning or striving to make tomorrow even better than today. With us, you’ll be supported by leaders who understand and care about your journey in our organisation, in our community and beyond. As a vital resource in our supportive team, you’ll influence the lives of our clients and their families directly. You’ll contribute to positive change in the autism community – every single day.

“They are determined to make a difference in the lives of their clients. And their everyday impact is undeniable.”

Want to be part of a state-wide team of practitioners who will support you to bring your ideas for exceptional practice to life? With Autism Queensland, you’ll accomplish just that.

Bringing understanding and a passion for helping others into the role to provide Neurodiverse-affirming approaches in creating solutions and supports through individual therapy, group programs, assessments (including diagnostic and functional behaviour assessment), mental stat examinations, case formulations and treatment plans.

Focusing on person-centered care, our team contribute to training, coaching, individual advocacy and case management, referral-making, and positive behaviour support plans across various settings. Maximizing their resourcefulness, creativity, flexibility, and out-of-the-box thinking in the assessment, formulation, and delivery of support to clients with a range of support needs.

Our team support autistic people with co-occurring mental illnesses like anxiety, depression, OCD, eating disorders, personality disorders, suicidal ideation, self-harm, and trauma. In this role, a conversation could carry a big impact - this is why we believe our strengths-focused, evidence-based approach to support so important. We focus on aligning strong skill sets - and developing in areas of passion.

While our top priority is finding people who share our genuine passion in supporting our clients, here are a few things the right person will be equipped with:

  • Demonstrated ability to form warm, trusting, non-judgmental therapeutic alliances with a range of clients including those with complex needs, behaviours of concern, communication differences and those who may present as escalated in early interactions.
  • Commitment to reflective practice and to intentional, continual learning in regular clinical supervision.
  • A strong background in evidence-based therapy (CBT, DBT, ACT, Narrative, Solution-Focused etc.).
  • Exposure to acuity and associated tailored approaches including experience treating suicidal clients; developing risk assessments and safety plans; and initiating referrals to relevant stakeholders to maintain safety of clients.
  • Thorough understanding of the principles of Trauma-Informed Care, the impact of trauma on people on the spectrum, and demonstrated capacity to integrate these principles into practice.
  • Knowledge of psychometric, diagnostic, and educational assessment practice and procedures.

*Please note this role requires a current registration with AHPRA as a fully registered psychologist.

From health and wellness programs to professional development, we encourage our staff to strive for a better balance.

  • Access up to $18,000 in Not-For-Profit salary packaging.
  • Look after your health through discounts to eligible Medibank private health insurance options, with singles through to family coverage options available.
  • Exceptional professional development opportunities to support your career growth.
  • Prioritise wellbeing through a discounted Fitness Passport with access to various fitness and aquatic centres all around the country – for you AND your immediate family!
  • Be part of an organisation with a practice excellence team dedicated to providing our people with clinical supervision and mentoring.
  • You’ll have access to the latest research through our own research and development team.
  • Gain meaningful experience through empowering autistic people, their families, carers, and the wider community.
