An opportunity for Registered Nurses with a passion for palliative care to make a difference as part of a dedicated clinical team at Central Queensland's first hospice.

About Us

Fitzroy Community Hospice (FCH) is a community-driven, not-for-profit charitable organisation established in direct response to the need for greater access to community-based palliative care in Central Queensland. Governed by a Board of Directors, FCH has grown in 3 years from an “idea” to a home-like 11-bed hospice facility; with a planned opening in early June 2024. As an alternative to hospital or home-based palliative care, FCH will provide the full spectrum of subacute palliative care, including short term symptom management, transitional care between hospital and home, and care in the last weeks and days of life. It is envisaged that an integrated model of care with Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service will improve patient and family experiences at the end of life.  

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the daily clinical care of FCH patients by completing comprehensive nursing assessments, implementing treatment plans, and providing excellent person-centred nursing care;
  • Practices collaboratively and flexibly within the multidisciplinary team to identify and comprehensively meet the holistic palliative care needs of patients;
  • Skillfully communicates with and supports the family members and loved ones of FCH patients; 
  • Effectively and safely delegates aspects of care to others according to their role and competence e.g., Healthcare Assistants, Hospitality Staff, and Volunteers;
  • Supports students undertaking placement at FCH with clinical mentorship;
  • As a Shift Leader, supervises and leads the provision of FCH care and support after hours and on weekends and public holidays;
  • Participates in quality improvement projects, audits, clinical reviews, and research when requested/required.

  • Time-Management: ability to prioritise and manage competing tasks, delegating where appropriate and seeking assistance/support when necessary; 
  • Self-care: strong understanding of and commitment to self-care strategies. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse;
  • Experience providing palliative care in a hospital, hospice, or community setting, and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary evidence-based palliative care;
  • Computer skills sufficient to effectively use an electronic patient medical record;
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of National Palliative Care and NSQHS Standards;
  • A knowledge of Palliative Care Outcomes Collaborative (PCOC) assessments for palliative patients is desirable.

Qualifications:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse (Division 1) with AHPRA;
  • Current Queensland Drivers’ Licence.

Other Requirements (prior to employment):

  • Satisfactory National Police Check;
  • Evidence of immunity to Vaccine Preventable Diseases.
