- Providing and supervising comprehensive and direct clinical nursing care, for and in consultation with residents and/or representatives, according to contemporary geriatric best practice and the nursing assessment process.
- Delegating appropriate tasks to Enrolled Nurses and to supervisor shifts, who are deemed competent, and providing both direct and indirect supervision to ensure proper compliance.
- Responding to emergencies, accidents, incidents and changes in the medical status of residents and, in consultation with residents and/representatives, making and implementing professional clinical and practical decisions.
- In consultation with residents and/representatives, assessing resident’s clinical, personal care and safety needs, making care plans, ensuring implementation, staff and family education and evaluation. This includes all clinical data collected by unregulated staff.
- In consultation with residents and/representatives, making timely referrals to other health professionals and facilitating consultation with residents, their families and other staff.
- Conferring with resident's family of progress of care plans, any untoward events and any changes in resident's medical condition. Supporting residents and relatives and involving them in positive appropriate activities.
- Ensuring that Occupational Safety and Health regulations are upheld at all times and by all staff, visitors and residents and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.
- Supporting, counseling and educating staff and providing support where required.
- Dealing with complaints and conflict using appropriate interpersonal skills. Conversing with residents, relatives and staff and manage difficult, demanding, confrontational, or abusive situations.
- Demonstrating a capacity to see the ‘big picture’ and to manage the overall supervision and delivery of person centred care for all residents by prioritizing tasks and coping with demands in a calm and professional manner.
