About the Role
We are looking for an early-career journalist who is keen to join our team based in Cairns to produce compelling news stories that engage local, state and national audiences.
Far North Queensland is an extraordinary location offering a broad range of stories from breaking news, court and council to stories about tourism, farming, the reef and crocodiles.
You will:
- Produce and present radio news bulletins, interviews and packages.
- Source and write stories for digital platforms with compelling images and video
- When required, film and present video packages and RVOs for TV and digital platforms.
- Generate stories that are relevant to a broad section of Australians and reflect the cultural, geographic and socio-economic diversity of the country.
- Contribute to the implementation of the Local Emergency Coverage plan and communicate with relevant stakeholders as required.
About You
We are seeking a journalist with great news sense who can spot a story and who understands how to tell it in a way that connects with the audience.
We’d prefer you have some skills in live presentation and broadcast – but that is not essential as we will teach the right candidate.
You will be able to demonstrate you can source and analyse information, exercise sound editorial judgement, work well with your colleagues and value the values and principles of the ABC.
You will also have:
- Understanding of the issues that affect and interest the local audience.
- Possession of a current and valid Driver’s Licence.
- A demonstrated and ongoing interest and passion in finding and telling stories that reflect Australia’s diversity.
- A proven ability to source and maintain contacts across the broader Australian community.
