Research AssistantDepartment of the Legislative Council

We have a vacancy for a fixed-term (12 months, with the potential to extend), full-time, Grade 4 Research Assistant to join the Joint Investigatory Committees within the Legislative Council.

About the roleThe Research Assistant undertakes specific research, as directed, including primary (for example, legislation) and secondary (for example, books and journal articles) legal research.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist with arranging public hearings, including advising witnesses on the conduct, procedures and processes involved in such public hearings, as requested. Prepare briefing notes on the organisations and individuals attending public hearings, as requested.
  • Make arrangements for meetings, public hearings and site visits, as requested.
  • Under supervision, liaise with and develop networks with key stakeholders.
  • Write draft chapters of reports for consideration by the Committee, including proofreading and other reviewing and checking tasks, as directed.

About you

You will have demonstrated proven high-level research and writing skills, and a demonstrated ability to assist in the preparation of accurate and timely written reports and correspondence, along with:

  • Demonstrated expertise in the provision of administrative services at a senior level, including the ability to arrange meetings, prepare agendas and correspondence and take minutes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships at a senior level requiring a high level of tact and confidentiality.
  • Capacity to work effectively as part of a small team with minimal supervision, demonstrating flexibility and initiative in dealing with competing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated capacity to quickly develop knowledge of law and procedures relevant to the operations of committees and Victoria's integrity system and the ability to provide accurate advice based on this knowledge.

A law degree or evidence of other legal studies or experience will also be regarded favourably.
