Job description

The Opportunity
The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an opportunity for a Research Associate. You will contribute independently and/or as a team member on a large international collaborative research project in the Pacific on Coastal Engineering, especially in relation to Floating Structures and Coastal Protection with a focus on eco-engineering and nature-based solutions. In this role you will design and develop pontoon structures that will support floating mangrove forests both in laboratory and real-world settings based on physical scale modelling and prototype testing.
This position will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities by supporting the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets. You will also have the opportunity to participate in conferences and workshops, assist with the supervision of students, and have active engagement with fellow researchers both at UNSW and overseas. Collaboration and partnership with National partners and United Nations agencies is part of this exciting new project.
This role reports to Prof Will Glamore and Dr. Andrew Dansie and has no direct reports.
  • Salary, Level A - $106,337 to $113,737 per annum + 17% superannuation

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering is in the Faculty of Engineering and has over 3,300 students and an operating budget of over $22 million. Skills and Experience
  • A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
  • Experience in Coastal Engineering, especially in relation to Floating Structures and Coastal Protection.
  • Experience designing and testing engineering and environmental solutions using physical models.
  • High numerical and computational skills to manage large datasets and produce detailed analyses.
  • Experience in eco-engineering and nature-based solutions, and/or an interest to develop a career in this area.
  • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Willingness to work as part of an international team and undertake travel overseas as required.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
