Research Officer/Postdoctoral Researcher

Cancer Research Unit

Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) was Australia’s first dedicated paediatric research facility and is now one of the world’s most highly regarded independent medical research organisations.  Our research focuses on the four key areas impacting children’s health: cancer, genomics and genetic diseases, neurobiology, and embryology. Our strong international reputation is based on decades of significant research outcomes in these areas of specialty.

 Motivated postdoctoral researchers with a passion for biomedical research are invited to apply for a Postdoctoral Research Officer position in the Cancer Research Unit (CRU).

The Role

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team working on projects that investigate telomere biology in a range of adult and paediatric cancer types, including sarcomas and cancers of the central nervous system. The team employ a variety of cell and molecular biology techniques, microscopy, genetic engineering, proteomics and other multi-‘omic approaches to characterise telomere biology states, investigate cancer biology and make discoveries that can be exploited in the development of new and improved cancer diagnostics and treatments.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of cancer biology and be proficient, cell culture, molecular biology, analysis of ‘omic data and genetic engineering.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Conduct, and contribute to research as part of a team
  • Provide intellectual input into experimental plans and the research project
  • Keep accurate records of research activities, results, analyses and reagents
  • Prepare manuscripts, reports and presentations
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant applications
  • Participate in shared tasks related to the operation of the laboratory and management of biological resources
  • Undertake administrative duties relevant to research activities
  • Actively participate in research meetings and seminars
  • Provide guidance and training to others in the team
  • Be aware of cutting-edge research techniques and develop and maintain contact with collaborative groups of scientists

To succeed you will have…

  • Hold a B.Sc. (Hons) and postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline
  • Research experience in cancer biology
  • Technical expertise and hands-on experience in molecular and cell biology, mammalian cell culture
  • Experience in microscopy techniques such as immunofluorescence, fluorescence in situ hybridization or live cell imaging
  • Experience with gene modification techniques, such as CRISPR/Cas9, siRNA-mediated gene suppression or viral-vector gene mediated transfer
  • Strong background in data analysis and biostatistics, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel, R Studio and graphing software
  • Analytical thinking and troubleshooting abilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication and organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work to deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidential information
