  • Casual contract from July 2024 - December 2024 with potential extension

  • HEO 6 Step 1, $65.61 per hour excluding superannuation for two days per week minimum

About the opportunity

The Sydney Policy Lab at the University of Sydney develops and delivers community-centred, multidisciplinary policy solutions for complex challenges facing the world. Our small team takes an exploratory and applied approach, bringing together community members, researchers at the University and policymakers in government.

The Senior Research Support Officer will provide high-quality, timely policy research and advice to the Lab Director and team on the diverse areas we work in. From preparing internal briefing notes with a rapid turnaround to supporting drafting of reports on our long-running projects and collaborations, the Officer will undertake core research work, contributing analysis and findings with an understanding of the policy and political landscape.

We welcome applications from both people with applied policy experience outside academia, and university researchers with policy and analysis skills.

DECISION MAKING AND DELEGATIONS OF AUTHORITY

The Senior Research Support Officer works under broad supervision, performing tasks as directed and in accordance with defined responsibilities. They choose appropriate methods of work and plan and prioritise tasks. They also resolve routine matters related to responsibilities and collaborate with others to resolve complex matter

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • conduct research and analysis, and support the strategic direction of research work undertaken by the Sydney Policy Lab

  • prepares high-quality written material for internal and external audiences

  • ensures that ethics guidelines, standards and WHS requirements are met for the work area

  • undertake ad-hoc projects and other activities.

About you

  • experience in research, data capture, analytical skills and report writing, including the ability to draw clear conclusions and recommendations from complex data and information sources

  • excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write, edit and proof publications for diverse audience

  • demonstrated ability to develop, well rounded and evidence-based policy responses taking into account research and analysis from external and internal sources and the diverse interests of stakeholders

  • strong problem solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods

  • experience in a research-related environment, with a working knowledge of research and an interest in translating results for impact

  • experience in a public administration, public policy, higher education sector or at a complex, multifaceted organisation

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
