Saint Stephen's College invites applications from suitably experienced and qualified individuals for the position of Science Laboratory Assistant.
This is a permanent part-time, term time position, working 28 hours per week.
Working under the direction of the Head of Science, the Science Laboratory Assistant ensures that the laboratory environment is safe, well-maintained, and conducive to effective science education.
This role involves assisting teachers by preparing laboratory setup, maintenance, and ensuring the availability of necessary equipment and materials for science experiments and demonstrations.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Prepare and set up equipment, instruments, and materials for science experiments and demonstrations in accordance with risk assessments.
• Use risk assess web site to prepare and schedule practicals
• Provide support during practical laboratory sessions, ensuring students adhere to safety protocols and guidelines when required.
• To use Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Risk Assessment Sheets on Hazardous chemicals.
• Maintain laboratory records, poisons register, material safety data sheets in various software or hard copy.
• Recording, controlling purchasing records and completing stock takes.
• Manager care and maintenance of the laboratory materials and equipment. This includes microscopes, balances and glass ware etc.
• Use Chemwatch for recording data in the Chemical Register would be an advantage;
• Use a range of Microsoft Suite software in the preparation of resources and presentations for the department.
• Maintain records for animal ethics requirements;
• Properly handle and dispose of chemical waste according to established safety and environmental protocols.
Essential Criteria
• Tertiary qualifications in Science or similar discipline;
• Previous experience as a Laboratory Assistant.
• Extensive experience in the use of computers, Microsoft Office programs, email and internet application;
• Strong organisational and time management skills, particularly the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Knowledge of Workplace Health and Safety policies and animal Ethics Guidelines.
• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills;
Mandatory Clearances/Certifications
• Blue Card, in accordance with ‘No Card, No Start law’, as per the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000.
