Senior Cost Engineer - ERA

  • Influence project-based teams and drive change in a Landmark Rehabilitation Project
  • The role is based in Brisbane, with occasional travel required to site in Jabiru, NT.

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Cost Engineer to manage and forecast costs for the Ranger Rehabilitation Project and work on any other ERA business segments. This role will report directly to the Project Controls Lead (Cost/Risk/Reporting).

The team is made up of a Cost engineer (execution/trends) and Cost engineer (systems reporting), who will directly support the Senior Cost Engineer with cost system, SAP data, project trends and reporting outputs.

You will be responsible for:

  • Support the set up and inputs information to maintain the Project cost system.
  • Support supply chain with budget and commitment tracking, including review and assistance with budget and pricing schedules for contracts/materials.
  • Support data (forecast) to ERA finance for funding requests/updates.
  • Ensure effective interface /liaison with the accounting system.
  • Maintain the correct WBS/SAP coding and commitment as the basis for Cost budgeting and forecasting.
  • Allocate budgets and consult with the project team.
  • Coordinate with the Project accountant to ensure the proper coding of invoices to ensure the correct settlement of actual costs.
  • Receive allocate and reconcile monthly project expenditure from accounting.
  • Ensure all costs reflect the project WBS and Capital Appropriation Request (CAR) funding strategy.
  • Record and monitor all project commitments and spending including project personnel, execution main works contracts and major procurement packages, 3rd party contracts, study costs, operations costs, SAP journals / Rio Tinto charges.
  • Identify and reflect changes in costs in all cost reports and aligned to project schedule.
  • Review scope changes and trends, control budget transfers or contingency drawdown.
  • Establish monthly accruals for work in progress (value of work earned) and consult with accounting.
  • Manage the monitoring and forecasting of costs (contractors and in-house) highlight issues/changes and recommend remedial action.
  • Evaluate alternative project options to identify optimum project strategies or resolve problems prior to and during execution.
  • Consult with budget managers and package owners to communicate performance against baselines, milestones, and update of forecast.
  • Consult with and provide Management and staff with visibility of cost trends.
  • Report progress, trends, variations, and efficiency.

What you will bring

  • Have experience establishing and maintaining cost control systems.
  • Able to develop pricing schedules for contracts.
  • Able to effectively communicate at all levels of project team from construction contractor, package owners, budget managers and Executive Committee (EXCO).
  • Familiar with developing a WBS and cost coding as the basis for cost budgeting and forecasting.
  • Able to allocate budgets and consult with the project team.
  • Able to demonstrate experience in coding of invoices to ensure the correct billing.
  • Able to demonstrate experience in allocation and reconciliation of monthly project expenditure.
  • Experience in recording and monitoring all project commitments and spending (including project personnel, third party contracts, corporate overheads).
  • Able to identify and reflect changes in costs in all cost reports and project schedule.
  • Experience in reviewing scope changes and Trends
  • Experience in establishing monthly accruals for work in progress (value of work earned) and consult with accounting.
  • Experience in managing the monitoring and forecasting of costs (contractors and in-house) highlight problems and recommend remedial action.
  • Be able to evaluate alternative project options to identify optimum project strategies or resolve problems prior to and during execution.
  • Be able to report progress, trends, variations, and efficiency.
  • The person shall understand and demonstrate the ability to work in a team and understand the need to provide a professional and prompt service to all stakeholders.
  • Able to assess and implement processes and governance.
  • Have held lead Cost Engineer roles within owners team.
  • Have extensive experience in cost management systems.
  • Team player and accept responsibilities under a lean organisation.
  • Sensitive to providing a dependable/efficient service to stakeholders.
  • Effective communicator and decision maker.
  • Lead the cost function priorities and set timelines.
  • Courage in approach to achieving required project outcomes and best for project approach.

Where you'll be working

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) is a publicly listed company with Rio Tinto its major shareholder. ERA has mined and produced uranium oxide from its Ranger mine in the beautiful and rugged Alligator Rivers area of the Northern Territory since 1980. The Ranger mine is located on Aboriginal land, and is surrounded by, but separate from Kakadu National Park.

Mining at Ranger ceased in November 2012 and since then, Ranger has been processing ore from stockpiles.

The role is based in Brisbane, with occasional travel required to site in Jabiru, NT.
