OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
The National Gallery is seeking an established First Nations curator to lead an enthusiastic team who work within a vibrant and rewarding environment stewarding and developing the National Gallery’s relationship with art and artists. Reporting to the Head Curator, First Nations Art, this position undertakes research and writes publications that enhance the reputation of the National Gallery and, in particular, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art collection.
The position is responsible for developing and presenting exhibitions and projects that forge new perspective and elevate new research to position the National Gallery as a place of scholarship and curatorial excellence.
This role constitutes an affirmative measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and is only available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

This position report of Senior Curator, First Nations Art is an ongoing full-time role with the First Nations Curatorial team.
THE KEY DUTIES OF THE POSITION - WHAT WILL YOU DO?
In accordance with the APS Executive Level 1 work level standards, you will:
- Serve the National Gallery’s expert adviser on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and represent the National Gallery and First Nations team both nationally and internationally, including managing internal and external relationships with community, specialist networks, government, and other stakeholders, working to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
- With the Head Curator, First Nations Art, and in consultation with the Director and Deputy Director, play a leading strategic role in developing the National Gallery’s exhibition, loans, publishing, acquisition and deaccessioning programs.
- Ensure that First Nations voices, principles and perspectives are embedded throughout the National Gallery’s curatorial work through facilitating and supporting a range of First Nations-led programs and initiatives, including community and artist consultation.
- Curate imaginative and distinctive exhibitions and displays for a diverse audience, including working closely with artists or other stakeholders on the development and execution of specific exhibitions, publications and commissions.
- Lead the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art curatorial team in proactively identifying and developing acquisition opportunities that expand the vision for the national collection.
- Manage the professional development and individual performance of a specialised curatorial team and provide regular feedback to team members. Develop and model a culture of continuous improvement, including building commitment to shared goals.
ELIGIBILITY:
To be eligible for this role you must:
- be an Australian citizen
- complete a police check.
- Hold a Tertiary qualifications in Visual Art, Education and/or Museum Studies or have relevant experience
