The work area

This role sits within the Data Science and Special Projects Directorate which is part of the Advisory Services business unit. The Data Science Unit at Treasury undertakes modelling of financial performance and activity in diverse areas, such as: NDIS funding, regional airfare subsidies, the “Justice Pipeline Model” of the WA criminal justice system, costing changes in WA public sector wages policy and evaluating the effectiveness of key Government programs.

The opportunity

Are you passionate about data and modelling? We are looking for a details-oriented person to join us and make a difference for Western Australia.

We currently have one Senior Data Scientist available for immediate filling on a fixed term full-time basis until 30 June 2025 with a possibility of extension or permanency.

In this exciting role you will be:

• developing and maintaining models of agency expenditure and activity;
• utilising your skills in Excel, R and other modelling techniques;
• be exposed to a diverse range of whole-of-government issues and priorities.

While we are looking for someone with sufficient technical expertise, equally important is the ability to derive key insights from data and to express modelling outputs in a succinct manner for non-technical audiences.  The Data Science Unit is regularly called on to present to public sector executives and Ministers.

Building and maintaining effective working relationships with stakeholders internal to Treasury and across the public sector will be important, in particular at an operational level, to develop, coordinate and deliver high quality and timely evidence-based analysis and advice to inform government decision making.
