Senior Data Scientist

Position No: Pool Ref 00974 Level/Salary: Level 6, $110,309 - $121,569 p.a. (PSCSAA 2022) Work Type: Permanent - Full Time, Fixed Term - Full Time Branch: Data Science Location: Perth Closing Date: 2024-03-26 4:00 PM

This is a pool recruitment process (Ref 00974). This pool will run for a period of twelve (12) months and may be used to fill ongoing fixed term contracts, secondments, acting/relieving and permanent opportunities.

There is currently one (1) permanent full time position available.

The WA Police Force are expanding their Data Science and Analytics (DSA) Division in order to support Operational and Tactical policing to assist with solving crime faster and keeping the WA community safe. We are looking for enthusiastic and talented individuals to join the WA Police Force in their data journey by being part of the Data Science unit as a Level 6 Senior Data Scientist. About the role:

The team is tasked with deploying machine learning models, developing data processing tools, and conducting analyses to enhance the operational and tactical capabilities of the WA Police Force. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will work with an innovative team, applying the latest in graph analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to police data to solve crime faster and improve community safety. You'll also collaborate with various teams across the agency, addressing unique and compelling problems innovatively with your data science skills!

About You:

  • Proficiency in descriptive and predictive analytics.
  • Critical and analytical thinking skills to resolve business issues.
  • Collaborative spirit and capability to cater to both internal and external stakeholder needs.
  • Ability to initiate, plan and lead data science projects in response to stakeholder requirements.
  • Provide expertise in machine learning, artificial intelligence and the current state of the art in data science tools.
  • Holding a tertiary qualification in a quantitative field such as data science, mathematics, statistics, business, science, engineering, or information technology is desirable, or professional experience in a relevant field.

POSITION OBJECTIVE

This role leads the technical development, implementation and management of data science services across a variety of different business areas to support operational and tactical outcomes of the Western Australia Police Force (WA Police Force). Develops and maintains quantitative models based on business needs, employs machine learning models and advanced analytics to help WA Police solve crime faster and keep the community safe. Provides expert advice on data science principles.

SPECIALIST PRE-REQUISITE

It is a requirement that the position holder is successful in obtaining and maintaining a NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 2 security clearance for the duration of their appointment in the position. Only Australian Citizens are eligible to hold and maintain the NEGATIVE VETTING LEVEL 2 security clearance. Any applicants who are currently not an Australian Citizen must be aware that this is an essential requirement to fulfil this position (please refer to the attached position description). Whilst there is nothing to preclude applicants from applying for the position if they have not yet been granted Australian Citizenship, applicants who are successful should be aware that they cannot be appointed unless they are in the process of applying for Australian Citizenship and are eligible to become an Australian Citizen prior to appointment.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants are asked to provide a statement of claim of no more than two (2) pages detailing your suitability for the role.

Applicants are also required to submit a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV). Your CV should provide enough detail (dot points are sufficient) to allow the selection panel to assess your skills, experience and qualifications relevant to the Key Accountabilities of the attached Position Description Form.

The CV must also include the names and contact details of two (2) referees who can comment on the applicant's ability to satisfy all of the Essential Work Related Requirements. Applicants should nominate at least one immediate (most contemporary) supervisor/manager unless exceptional circumstances exist.

Please note: For applicants deemed suitable, all Essential Work Related Requirements listed in the Position Description Form will be assessed at some stage during the selection process.

OTHER CONDITIONS

In addition to the above mentioned vacancy, a POOL is being created to fill future vacancies that may arise within the metropolitan area. This POOL will remain active for a period of twelve (12) months from the initial appointment. Applicants who are assessed as 'suitable' at the completion of this process, will be placed in the POOL and may be considered for future permanent and temporary vacancies as they become available.

Once an applicant from the POOL accepts a permanent position via this selection process, that applicant will be removed from the POOL. Applicants who accept a temporary vacancy will remain in the POOL and will continue to be considered for permanent opportunities as they arise.

Where an applicant in the POOL declines an opportunity (either permanent or temporary), that applicant may forfeit their right to be considered before other suitable applicants who were identified to be less competitive.

Integrity and criminal checks will be conducted if the recommended applicant for a position is not a current WA Police Force employee. Any relocation costs associated with appointment to these positions may be the responsibility of the successful applicants.
