The Development and Regulatory team are staffed with a close-knit team of Building Surveying professionals (Development Officers) with a great working culture. Each officer is responsible for the undertaking of building rules assessment and inspection of all classes and types of buildings. They provide sound building and development advice to internal and external customers, investigate unsafe developments and monitor the fire safety and occupancy of buildings.
In any given year our Building Surveyors may inspect of up to 90 new commercial builds and between 600-700 residential homes throughout the diverse demography that makes up one of South Australia’s best councils.
We now have a vacancy for a Senior Building Surveyor who seeks to work in a collaborative and positive team culture and independently manage a workload in an environment that supports your current and future abilities.
Reporting to the Unit Manager Regulatory Services, our Building Surveyors work in a highly flexible environment allowing them to balance site inspections, office-based and home-based work. With efficient procedures in place helping the team work autonomously and make collective decisions, our Building Surveyors are also encouraged to continually develop their skills. They are supported by a personalised development program allowing them to tailor Career Planning Development and learning and development opportunities to suit individual needs.
A day in life in this position includes the following.
- Assessing the Building Rules Consent stage of development applications
- Inspection of new and existing developments for compliance with approvals, the building rules and the PDI Act
- Issuing/reviewing Certificates of Occupancy and schedules of Essential Safety Provisions, including day to day management of the ESP register
- Supporting the City of Marion Building Fire Safety Committee by undertaking follow up inspections, attending meetings, reviewing fire engineering reports and preparing correspondence
- Mentoring and supporting building surveying colleagues
- Providing expert specialist advice to internal and external customers on building and development matters
- Instructing and briefing Council’s solicitors on enforcement matters, and represent Council at the Environment, Resources and Development Court, or other relevant Court as required.
We are looking to receive applications from suitably experienced Building Surveyors. This position represents a great career choice for an applicant looking to take the next step, or for a more experienced officer that seeks to work in a challenging and positive environment.
It is assumed you will possess a solid understanding of the national Construction Code, the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act and associated legislation.
It will be necessary to possess tertiary qualifications in building surveying and have Accreditation (or be working toward) being an Accredited Professional – Building Level 1 or 2.
A Driver’s licence (car), an ability to climb ladders and work at heights (for site inspection), occasional out of hours attendance and occasional attendance at Council meetings is required for this position.
Prior experience will determine the pay grade.
