The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the central office within the University responsible for the management of legal matters. We provide comprehensive legal advice and services to University Council, senior management and staff in relation to the University’s governance and its diverse education, research and commercial endeavours. The Office of the General Counsel also coordinates access to external legal services as required.
The Opportunity
The Senior Lawyer is a senior legal contact within the Disputes & Regulatory stream of the OGC, supporting the Director of the stream in the provision of timely, authoritative legal advice and services on a wide range of legal matters.
Areas of law within the stream include regulatory matters, litigation and disputes, complex general and research misconduct, investigations, whistleblower advice, complex FOI support and contentious student-related concerns.
As the successful candidate you will:
- Provide timely, accurate and practical high-quality legal advice, research, documents and services to management and staff on day-to-day and complex legal matters
- Act as a senior legal contact relating to disputes and regulatory law issues by providing strategic legal advice
- Build and sustain relationships with a network of colleagues, clients and stakeholders and use these to facilitate cooperation and deliver services aligned with client needs
- Provide leadership and guidance to colleagues both within the OGC and external to the OGC as appropriate
- Be proactive and responsive to changing priorities and demands by applying judgement to prioritise your work and effectively manage client expectations in a high volume legal office
About you
To be successful in this role you will:
- Be a qualified legal practitioner with at least 10 years Post-Qualified Experience (PQE) and current unrestricted practising certificate
- Have extensive post-admission experience in managing complex and sensitive matters relating to disputes and regulatory law
- Enjoy working in a complex environment managing a busy portfolio of high-quality legal advice and services
- Have a proven ability to prioritise your own workload and effectively manage client expectations in a fast-paced, complex environment
- Have excellent communication skills along with strong stakeholder management skills
