This is a 3-month temporary position.

Your new role As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will be instrumental in shaping the legal framework of the organisation. Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing commercially relevant legal advice across a broad spectrum, including statutory interpretation, contracts and commercial law, water law, property, environmental and planning law, and administrative law, to support the organisation's strategic and operational objectives.

• Advising on the development, negotiation, and implementation of contracts and legal agreements to ensure they are efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with the organisation’s risk profile.

• Independently managing complex or sensitive legal matters with minimal supervision.

• Offering legal support to the Legal & Governance team, contributing to the team's success and supporting organisational goals under the guidance of the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary and Assistant General Counsel.

• Delivering authoritative legal advice to the Executive Leadership and Senior Leadership teams.

• Identifying and advising on emerging legal issues and their implications.

• Managing litigation and legal disputes, ensuring the organisation's interests are safeguarded.

What you'll need to succeed 

• Advanced skills in critical thinking, communication, stakeholder and relationship management, decision-making, and delivering results.
• Significant expertise in statutory interpretation, contract and commercial law, water law, environmental, planning and property law, administrative law, and both civil and criminal litigation procedures.
• At least 6 years of post-admission experience in a similar role, with a preference for backgrounds in construction and/or government sectors.
• A proven track record of litigation experience and process improvement initiatives.
• A tertiary qualification in Law.
• Admission to practice as an Australian legal practitioner.
