The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) plays a critical role in the national transport supply chain and in the overall economic development of Australia. Managing and operating more than 8,500 km of track in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland, makes ARTC one of Australia's largest rail network owners.
The Inland Rail Program is a 1600km rail infrastructure project stretching from Brisbane to Melbourne incorporating new and existing rail track. The program includes the upgrading of existing standard gauge track, the enhancement of existing standard gauge track to cater for double stacking and the construction of new standard gauge links comprising of viaducts, tunnels, rail track, crossings and bridges. About the opportunity
As the Senior Legal Counsel, you will function under the guidance of the General Counsel, actively engaging in their key initiatives. Your primary role involves delivering comprehensive legal and strategic support concerning planning and environmental matters related to the Inland Rail program across diverse jurisdictions. This position encompasses full Senior Legal Counsel duties, focusing particularly on environment, native title, cultural heritage, and related issues for key internal stakeholders within the Inland Rail project. Your responsibilities extend to managing the company's legal rights and interests to ensure the successful execution of the Inland Rail project. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with external counsel, engage with various stakeholders, and work seamlessly with Inland Rail personnel across the nation.
About you
The ideal candidate should hold a current legal practicing certificate, possess experience in mentoring and managing professional teams, and demonstrate a focus on environmental, planning, and/or native title law post-admission. Strong communication and negotiation skills, along with the ability to deliver practical commercial outcomes, are essential. Additionally, the candidate should contribute effectively to team dynamics, establish achievable business plans, and exhibit expertise in developing, negotiating, and managing commercial service contracts. Demonstrated managerial ability in organizing and working with multi-disciplinary teams, as well as building strong relationships at senior levels, is a key requirement.
