Materials Assurance is a team within the Assets and Engineering division and is responsible for providing specialist technical guidance, advice, accreditation, and audit and surveillance services in the areas of concrete and quarry materials to customers including DTP, MTIA, Strategic Projects and Industry.

About the Role
The Senior Officer - Geological (Quarry) carries out quarry inspections including source rock and product sampling, preparation of reference specimens and registration of crushed rock mixes and liaises with and influences stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes in quarry products accreditation and supply. The position implements the department's quarry accreditation program and crushed rock mix registration scheme and provides sound advice to key stakeholders that may impact the decisions they make in relation to quarry materials and their use. The position develops innovative responses to complex problems in quarry products where defined policy, procedures and precedents do not always exist.

Position Outcomes
To be successful in the role the ideal candidate will be a skilled professional with expertise in evaluating quarry product quality, materials specifications, and effective planning for quarry/recycler accreditation programs. The ideal candidate should possess strong leadership qualities, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders while aligning with organisational values.
- Apply well developed specialist skills to contribute to the development and delivery of VicRoads quarry/recycler accreditation program using a consultative and client focused approach with key stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes.
- Exercise professional independent judgement to develop innovative solutions to often complex problems related to the quality, durability and end use of crushed rock and aggregates used on major and minor infrastructure projects produced from both quarries and recycling facilities.
- Contribute to the administration and implementation of the department's crushed rock mix registration scheme.
- Provide sound advice to internal and external stakeholders on issues related to source rock, quarry products and recycled materials.
- Liaise with key stakeholders, applying a consultative and client-focused approach to achieve successful outcomes and manage risk to DTP and projects.
- Exercise professional judgement to plan, execute and monitor a targeted risk management program which adequately protects the service life and performance of pavement materials used in major and minor infrastructure projects in accordance with client expectations.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a team culture and innovation and actively seek opportunities for process improvement. Support the management team in the design and delivery of opportunities to develop capability, particularly with respect to quarry/recycler investigations, inspections and the use of fit-for-purpose materials.
- Develop innovative solutions to often complex problems related to the quality, durability and end use of crushed rock and aggregates used on major and minor infrastructure projects produced from both quarries and recycling facilities, exercising professional independent judgement and problem solving.
- Effectively encourage, share, motivate and develop employees to ensure timely and efficient delivery of services associated with the technical discipline of the team.
Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
- Appropriate technical qualifications and/or relevant industry experience
Desirable
- Appropriate engineering or geoscience qualification
- Relevant industry experience in quarry materials
- Experience in petrographic analysis / polarisation microscopy
Role Specific Requirements
- Driver's License
- The role involves field work (quarry inspections) and intrastate travel, including occasional overnight travel
