  • A purpose and a challenge that matter
You'll work hard to preserve and manage the reef's marine and island parks and culturally significant sites. You will lead staff ensuring their training and mentoring and developing working relationships with first nations people.
  • Diverse, interesting work and experiences
You'll love the diversity, flexibility, and autonomy here. One day you'll be educating visitors and conducting fire management; the next, diving to collect samples, operating a vessel or writing reports. You'll do varied, stimulating work, and your office view will be stunning. Your strong leadership and communication skills will assist you in tackling evolving priorities. Outdoor duties such as vessel patrols, seabird surveys and island health checks will balance indoor work like compiling taskings and assessments of staff.
  • Opportunities to learn, discover and grow
You'll be dealing with both familiar and complex issues daily. This will give you the chance to test, refine and build on your practical and leadership skills constantly.
You'll learn so much every day as you grow your conservation and resource management skills. Your development will be supported using a wide range of online training programs. In fact, you'll see there are significant progression opportunities to fast track your career towards Principal Ranger, due of the breadth of both marine and terrestrial activities you'll undertake and our enviable funding position which allows us to deliver new and exciting projects.
  • A collaborative, innovative environment
As a leader you'll form invaluable professional relationships with Traditional Owners, various commonwealth and state agencies and stakeholders. You'll also be dedicated to upholding a positive, safe, diverse, and inclusive culture. Together, we achieve more.
  • Working Regional
You and your ranger mates will be largely self-reliant. You'll regularly undertake offshore patrols by vessel or light aircraft to conduct inspections and investigations at islands, reefs, and remote locations across the area. You'll need the flexibility to participate in remote offshore operations and be the solver of marine park and island protected area management issues; you're the go-to person!
  • Airlie Beach Regional living
Off the clock, you'll be spoilt for choice of activities, with the spectacular southern Great Barrier Reef and beautiful coastline at your doorstep; diving, camping, and fishing are staple activities for us here. Jump on a ferry and go diving with the rays at one of the coastal islands in the Whitsundays or Mackay Islands! There really is something for everyone to do in this region.
You'll need:
  • Resilience, pragmatism, tenacity, and confidence in a regional or remote setting
  • Courageous and ethical leadership, advanced communication skills
  • The ability to form trusted relationships with both First Nations partners and others
  • Organisational, project management and teamwork skills
  • Compliance and enforcement skills
  • A strong understanding of conservation and natural resource management, marine operations and workplace health and safety (both physical and psychological)
  • Administration and computer skills
