Job description

About the Environmental Sciences and Economics Stream
This recruitment activity is seeking to fill a number of positions within the agency that have a need for qualifications and/or experience in Environmental Sciences and/or economics. Through one application you will be able to be considered for a number of roles across various branches that may align with your qualifications and experience.
What is a Regulatory Officer?
Regulatory Officers are the heart of our business and make up the majority of our employees. Regulatory Officers work directly with our stakeholders, administering the various pieces of legislation that the agency is responsible for. Working across a variety of sections within the business no two positions are ever truly the same, however the people all share the same qualities and core skills, including:
  • A high level of attention to detail and pride in the work they produce.
  • A desire to learn and grow, being able to quickly learn the complex legislation administered by the agency and grow their understanding of the work of the agency.
  • An inquisitive mind to solve complex problems and analyse issues, undertaking research and using a variety of tools and systems to prepare and analyse data.
  • Strong communication skills, being able to break down legislation and policy into understandable terms and educate stakeholders.
  • Being results driven, working within environments with often immovable deadlines, whilst also working as part of a team to drive agency outcomes.
Our Senior Regulatory Officers are highly experienced professionals who are leaders within their teams. They exercise sound judgement and undertake complex, often time sensitive work including briefing our executive.
We are seeking to fill positions across 4 branches, including:
  • Soil, Emissions Avoidance and Contracts branch
  • Renewable Energy Target branch
  • Vegetation and Analytics branch
  • National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting and Safeguard branch

The positions within these branches have a strong focus on assessing applications for participation in our schemes and as a part of this qualifications in Environmental Sciences, general science or engineering or forestry are highly advantageous. In addition, as we are an economic regulator, qualifications in economics or related disciplines alongside an ability to research and assess data are highly valued.
Having qualifications in the relevant fields is not a mandatory requirement - we employ people from a range of backgrounds who may not have tertiary qualifications or who hold qualifications in other fields. If you have a passion for the work we do and can display the core skills and qualities we want you to apply. We encourage you to review the specifics below for each branch to identify where your experience could make a valued contribution to our important work.
When applying you will be asked for your preferences for what branches you would like to be considered for. Applications will be assessed against the listed qualifications/experience.
This recruitment is being used to fill positions that are available now, and anticipated vacancies which will be filled via the merit pool.
The key duties of the position include
