About the Environmental Sciences and Economics StreamThis recruitment activity is seeking to fill a number of positions within the agency that have a need for qualifications and/or experience in Environmental Sciences and/or economics. Through one application you will be able to be considered for a number of roles across various branches that may align with your qualifications and experience.What is a Regulatory Officer? Regulatory Officers are the heart of our business and make up the majority of our employees. Regulatory Officers work directly with our stakeholders, administering the various pieces of legislation that the agency is responsible for. Working across a variety of sections within the business no two positions are ever truly the same, however the people all share the same qualities and core skills, including:
  • A high level of attention to detail and pride in the work they produce.
  • A desire to learn and grow, being able to quickly learn the complex legislation administered by the agency and grow their understanding of the work of the agency.
  • An inquisitive mind to solve complex problems and analyse issues, undertaking research and using a variety of tools and systems to prepare and analyse data.
  • Strong communication skills, being able to break down legislation and policy into understandable terms and educate stakeholders.
  • Being results driven, working within environments with often immovable deadlines, whilst also working as part of a team to drive agency outcomes.
Our Senior Regulatory Officers are highly experienced professionals who are leaders within their teams. They exercise sound judgement and undertake complex, often time sensitive work including briefing our executive.We are seeking to fill positions across 4 branches, including:
  • Renewable Energy Target
  • Soil, Emissions Avoidance and Contracts branch
  • Vegetation and Analytics branch
  • National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting and Safeguard branch
The positions within these branches have a strong focus on assessing applications for participation in our schemes and as a part of this qualifications in Environmental Sciences, general science or engineering or forestry are highly advantageous. In addition, as we are an economic regulator, qualifications in economics or related disciplines alongside an ability to research and assess data are highly valued.Having qualifications in the relevant fields is not a mandatory requirement – we employ people from a range of backgrounds who may not have tertiary qualifications or who hold qualifications in other fields. Applications will be assessed against the listed qualifications/experience.This recruitment is being used to fill positions that are available now, and anticipated vacancies which will be filled via the merit pool.Duties of the positions Please refer to the attached Candidate Information Pack for detailed information about the duties that may be performed at each level across the various branches. Common duties across the branches include:
  • Providing expert work knowledge, precedent and established legislation, policy, procedures and guidelines to situations involving complexity and sensitivity which require considerable interpretation and analysis.
  • Performing independent research work and analysis including preparation of written material, program documentation, plans, reports, briefs, status updates and correspondence.
  • Managing relationships and working closely with key stakeholders and/or program participants to understand issues and resolve or escalate as appropriate.
  • Supervising a team performing regulatory roles, assisting in strategic planning, program, and project management and/or policy development for the section.
  • Managing situations involving a high level of complexity and sensitivity which require considerable legislative interpretation and analysis while adhering to procedure and guidelines.
  • Developing and supporting complex relationships with internal and external stakeholders, anticipating and respond to stakeholder needs and expectations and ensuring that section and branch goals are achieved.
  • Applying professional judgement to perform and communicate robust regulatory decisions, evaluating ambiguous and incomplete information, factoring in risks and being sensitive to context.

Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Sciences, economics, engineering, data science, law and other related disciplines are highly advantageous but not required.Specific qualifications and experience are detailed for each branch within the Candidate Information Pack.Application process Your application will consist of your CV/resume and the contact details for 2 referees.
