Job description:
  • Temporary Opportunity for 12 months
  • Location: Parramatta with flexible working arrangements available
  • Legal Officer V, Salary ($144,140 - $146,966) plus employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

Your role

The Advisings and Community Protection team (ACP team) provides legal advice and support to the Attorney General as First Law Officer in respect of his statutory and common law responsibilities, as well as other Ministers and the Executive in the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). The team undertakes strategic litigation management and advises on legislation to contribute to reducing reoffending, ensuring the safety and protection of the community, and maintaining public confidence in the criminal justice system.

The ACP team provides legal services in areas including:

  • Commencement of proceedings under legislation relating to high-risk offenders and forensic patients
  • Reviews of convictions and sentences
  • Exercise of the Royal prerogative of mercy
  • Statutory powers and functions of Corrective Services NSW, Youth Justice NSW and other DCJ bodies.

What you'll do

You will provide high quality and timely legal advice, briefings and support in complex areas of law to contribute to the delivery of efficient and effective legal services and the work of Legal Branch and DCJ.

As a Senior Solicitor in the ACP team, you will also:

  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders internal and external to the Department to manage active matters and ensure the effective implementation and operations of various legislation and policies across the DCJ portfolio.
  • Prepare and review complex legal advice and documents (including Ministerial correspondence and briefing notes) and manage contentious and sensitive matters.
  • Supervise and mentor other solicitors and legal support staff and assist managers to foster a culture of continuous professional development, collaboration and cohesion, and high performance.

What we're looking for

  • Legal Qualifications and with a current NSW practising certificate.

Appointments are subject to reference checks. Some roles may also require the following checks/ clearances:

  • National Criminal History Record Check in accordance with the Disability Inclusion Act 2014
  • Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012

The successful applicant may also be required to undertake a National Security Clearance.
