About Us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of role
Advanced Capability Support contributes to the department by supporting the planning, development and production implementation of decision information support systems spanning multiple hazards. Consisting of a team of technical and operational specialists, the unit is responsible for the managing a range of specialist analytics and decision support tools and systems that enable QFES to meet community needs.
Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will be a key member of the team responsible for supporting operations through the use of a range of specialist analytics and decision support tools and systems to ensure capability products and systems meet the decision requirements needs across planning, preparedness, response and recovery phases of disaster management. You will be required to administer the development and review of processes, procedures, governance artefacts, maintenance of data stores, knowledge stores, metadata, system performance reviews and other elements as required to ensure the successful delivery of services.

- Knowledge and/or experience managing data from multiple sources, at scale, in a Business Intelligence system such as Tableau or Power BI. i.e. data sources such as files, databases, REST endpoints, etc.
- Experience analysing and manipulating spatial data using ESRI Geographical Information System(GIS) products, including ArcGIS Pro, python scripting environments, and/or FME.
- Experience working with product release cycles, including Development, User Acceptance Testing, Production release schedules, and Version Control.
- Experience using Python scripting to deliver robust and repeatable data workflows
- It is expected that the incumbent may participate in an out-of-hours on-call roster during emergency operations. This may require work outside of normal hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends, working extended hours and may include deployment to other parts of the state or interstate.
- Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of disaster risk management data, processes, systems and tools to support planning and decision-marking during phases of disaster management.
- Provide advice and support to stakeholders relating to resilient data practices, including automation of data gathering, integration, storage, and interrogation to inform operational capability.
- Administer complex data management requirements in a high visibility decision information system, including automating the sourcing, storage, processing, and ingestion of data products.
- Support the identification and scheduling of issues, risks and solutions that may impact the successful and stable delivery of capability product release cycles, version controls and user acceptance testing.
- Assist in the preparation and review of reports, briefing papers, submissions and other correspondence which support the implementation of advanced capability strategies and programs.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders relating to hazard analysis, prediction, and disaster management to ensure capability products are maintained.
- Operate and maintain, curated data repositories, involving working with scripts, GIS data and workflows and network / cloud file stores to support delivery of robust and repeatable data workflows.
