About the Role:
The Senior Technical Officer (Science) is responsible for managing and overseeing, under the direction of the Technical Manager, the College’s science laboratories (Chemistry, Biology, Community Based) and associated facilities at the Footscray Park Campus and other campuses as required. The incumbent will also be required to ensure the provision of laboratory support services to students and staff that facilitate the achievement of high
This is a full time fixed term position at a HEP 6 classification, salary range $85,667 (per annum) - $92,728 (per annum). This is a Full Time 1.0FTE ( 36.75 hours per week) Fixed Term until 10/06/2025 Position.
Duties:
An example of duties you may perform will include:
- Set up and manage the undergraduate and research laboratories and associated facilities in a range of areas including Biology, Chemistry, Foundation Studies (including camps, field trips and outreach programs) and Community Science units.
- Develop and implement safe operating procedures for specialist pieces of equipment, laboratory policies and processes and experimental procedures for use by staff, undergraduate and post graduate students in the Science laboratories of the College.
- Provide technical support for College teaching, research and consulting activities (as appropriate), set up complex experiments including preparation of solutions, media and cultures and liaise with College staff to purchase chemicals and consumables as required for practical classes and general laboratory usage.
- Organise and oversee the College’s laboratories teaching/research spaces and equipment to meet specified requirements for a variety of teaching/research activities ensuring compliance with internal and external accreditation procedures, Australian Standards and University policies.
- In collaboration with other University departments, ensure that all Biosafety, OHS, Chemical Management and associated policies and procedures, related to the science laboratories, are developed, implemented and adhered to.

The department is a shared service providing support to the University Colleges, Victoria University Research and VU TAFE. This role provides services into all sectors as required.
