The Opportunity
Our City Development Department has an exciting opportunity for a suitably experienced and enthusiastic Senior Urban Designerto join our friendly and professional team. Reporting to the Coordinator City Design, you will play a lead role in pursuing design excellence across Council. The role will be responsible for bringing about positive change in the City through the design advice, advocacy, projects and policies delivered from within the City Design unit of Council.
You will be involved in urban design analysis, preparation of masterplans and frameworks, feasibility studies, preparation of plans, development and input into policies, strategies and technical guidelines; referrals from other Council branches for expert design advice; and project management that relates to the development of key capital projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Core projects within Maribyrnong's Metropolitan Activity Centres - Footscray - and the major and neighbourhood activity centres. Key projects include public realm planning and design, precinct framework plans and strategic neighbourhood plans along with developing strategies for their implementation
- Develop a forward program and prepare a range of built form and urban design guidelines and policies for various precincts within the municipality
- Undertake the architectural and urban design assessment of major development proposals through the strategic and statutory planning process
- Participate and review the design content of Council's major capital works program, involving key community and leisure facilities. Development of consultancy briefs, design reviews as required
- Develop high quality concept and schematic designs for key public spaces and streets in accordance with key strategies and plans for the City's Activity Centres.
About You
To be considered for this role, you will have the following:
- Tertiary qualification in town planning, architecture, landscape architecture and/or urban design
- A thorough understanding of the Victorian Planning Legislative Framework - the Victorian Planning Provisions and the Planning and Environment Act 1987
- Knowledge and understanding of applying urban design theory, practice, principles and precedent into real projects
- Strong writing skills including the ability to prepare clear and concise reports and data
- Effective communication and problem solving skills to produce cooperative outcomes within a team environment, strong mediation and conciliation skills
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development and implementation of strategies, policies and guidelines
- Capacity to manage time effectively, identify workload priorities and meet deadlines
- Well-developed customer service ethic and strong commitment to improving service delivery
