Productivity is leveraged on how well our systems are utilised so a systems savvy Shift Manager will flourish in our environment. Strong leadership skills, management experience and interpersonal skills will serve the successful candidate well, as this role will drive productivity and a high performance culture as well as manage and lead our operational workforce on a shift by shift basis.

As a 24/7 stevedoring operation, the Shift Manager will work a rotating shift pattern which will include nights and weekends.

Reporting to the Manager – Stevedoring, this role is responsible for the safe and efficient functioning of the Terminal by controlling the shifts activities in accordance with policies, procedures, business requirements and targets. You will take responsibility for the productivity and success of each shift that you manage, which will include:

  • Providing leadership and supervision of the workforce over the operation, ensuring it is run in accordance with approved Operating Procedures and WHS standards
  • Oversight and management of Terminal activities to ensure continuity of the operation
  • Making, and taking responsibility for, operational decisions whilst considering various factors, such as cost, efficiency, business requirements and service delivery
  • Maximising productivity across the site and meeting productivity targets,
  • Managing relationships with all customers and key stakeholders to achieve business objectives, whilst simultaneously using your interpersonal skills to manage performance across the workforce
  • Providing leadership in the implementation of, and compliance with, policies, WHS processes and business requirements
  • Managing conduct and performance where necessary and escalating through the appropriate channels
  • Conduct shift toolboxes and manage all aspects of safety as per legislation and company policy and procedure

The successful candidate will have:

  • Significant experience leading people within an operational environment
  • Experience working within heavy industry, such as Stevedoring, Transport, Logistics, Manufacturing, Construction or Mining at a management level
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities with a proven ability to take responsibility for decision making
  • Strong system skills with the capability to utilise our systems to aid planning, resourcing and decision making. Strong Excel skills are also desirable as you will be involved in analysing cost drivers
  • A resilient and adaptable character with the ability to manage through change and ambiguous situations
  • Previous experience with the implementation of process improvement projects coupled with experience of embedding, and ensuring compliance with, new processes
  • Demonstrated experience working within a unionised environment coupled with an understanding of EA and relevant awards
  • Knowledge of safety and security legislation
