Our client is seeking to engage a Special Counsel.
Clearance required: Baseline (or ability to obtain)
Location: Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra
Term: 6 Months
Overview:
Our client requires a short-term Special Counsel to provide additional support for its Legal Services Branch. The consultant will provide specialist advice and strategy on an array of matters. The successful candidate will have a strong background in litigation and administrative law as well as a deep understanding of government legal practice and online services (or the ability to come up to speed quickly). In this position, you will be responsible for leading legal analysis and providing strategic legal advice to the Commissioner and senior staff at the agency including on litigation and legal risk. You should have excellent communication, interpersonal, and time management skills, and the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
To be eligible for this role you must have:
- legal experience in regulation and enforcement
- a strong working knowledge of administrative law and government legal practice
- a good understanding of the online sector and/or the ability to quickly grasp technical concepts
- deep experience in litigation including litigation management and strategy
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic advice to the Commissioner on key decisions, legal implications and legal risks.
- Manage and strategically advise on key agency litigation including review of key documents.
- Identify key legal risks and advise senior staff within the agency.
- Collaborate internally with clients and internal teams to develop legal strategies that align with business objectives.
- Stay up to date on developments and pivot and direct agency decision making where require.
Requirements:
- Legal qualifications and admission to practice in Australia
- A current unsupervised practicing certificate or eligibility to hold one
- Minimum of 8 years of post-qualification legal experience in a law firm or as an in-house counsel
- Good understanding of administrative law
- Sound commercial and governmental awareness
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
