About the role

We are looking for a Specialist Environmental & Heritage to join our Rio Tinto Projects Team.

Within this role, you will use your technical knowledge, project management and interpersonal skills to effectively partner with our operations and other key stakeholders to administer various environmental management, data and document management systems, and lead associated improvement projects.

This is a fantastic opportunity to manage a diverse portfolio of work within Rio Tinto's Projects team. Reporting to the Environment & Heritage Manager, you will:

  • Provide support and advice to Study and Project Managers to effectively manage Environmental & Heritage risk and enable delivery of projects on time.
  • Provide technical Environmental & Heritage advice to project personnel during all project phases.
  • Facilitate input into necessary Environmental & Heritage approvals within project timelines.
  • Interpret relevant legislation and communicate requirements accurately to project teams.
  • Review tender and contract documentation and manage consultants and contractors as required.
  • Provide specialist input into risk assessment workshops by highlighting key environmental risks.
  • Participating in project designs to ensure incorporation of sustainable development and caring for country principles
  • Review Environmental & Heritage aspects of engineering design.
  • Providing a sufficient level of detail on handover to ensure operational readiness.
  • Manages risk and opportunities associated with our business activities and Project implementation.
  • Provide specialist professional Environmental & Heritage advice to Senior Management, Project Managers and relevant stakeholders on matters related to D&T Projects.
  • Plans, implements, and reports on activities that enable the organisation to meet its strategy and objectives in the area of Environment & Cultural Heritage
  • Provides direction to the EPC/EPCM/Delivery Partner to maintain Project scope, objectives and schedule across the environmental and heritage disciplines.
  • Develops a knowledge base of sensitive sites within proximity of the Project and utilises this knowledge and expertise for the benefit of the business to minimise risk

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • Degree qualification in Science or Engineering based in an environment discipline
  • 5-10 years environmental management experience in a mining, construction, or related industry
  • Familiarity of environmental approvals process and resultant conditions and commitments
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, translating technical information for the target audience
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, and confidence to operate at all levels of the business
  • Proficient in managing complex and sensitive issues with detailed reputation management experience
  • Stakeholder engagement across a diverse range of disciplines

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience with Rio Tinto Systems and Processes
  • Developing and implementing systems, in particular ISO 14001
  • Experience in government negotiations and/or working in government
