About us
Central Desert Regional Council is a local government authority covering an area over 282,000 Sq. kilometres. The Council provides a range of services in 12 communities to the North of Alice Springs: Lajamanu, Ti tree, Wilora, Nturiya, Pmara Jutunta, Willowra, Laramba, Nyirripi, Yuelamu, Atitjere, Engawala and Yuendumu. There are also several homelands and outstations. The Central Desert area is considered remote and disadvantaged and over 80% of the population is Aboriginal.
Primary Objective
The Specialist, Senior Accountant is responsible for the effective and efficient support and advice around Finance services across the organisation and provides accurate and value adding reporting and analysis of Council's financial position that supports decision-making capability in accordance with Central Desert Regional Council strategic and regional plans, policies, procedures, relevant legislation and accounting standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of Council’s annual financial statements and liaise with Auditors to finalise and publish statements.
- Assist with Council's financial management reporting, which includes the provision of financial analysis and forecasting to advice on strategic and business planning.
- Complete a range of accounting tasks and processes including month-end close, general ledger reconciliations, chart of accounts maintenance and capitalisation, disposal, depreciation of assets, as well as preparation of journals and trial balance.
- Compile financial reports, grant acquittals and returns to external agencies and provide professional advice to key stakeholders.
- Create and submit financial reports and grant acquittals when Council key stakeholders are not available.
- Prepare and lodge the monthly BAS statement and assist with the preparation of the annual FBT statement to ensure Council's obligations in respect of taxation are fulfilled by the required timeframes.
- Provide assistance in ensuring that all other reconciliations are completed as required.
- Monitor Council’s budgets against actual performance, resolve issues, make recommendations and liaise with applicable Council budget- holders to address major variances in a timely manner. According to Local Government timeframes, create specific budget elements relating to finance processes, as well as the creation of individual service budgets when Council key stakeholders are not available.
- Provide expert advice on financial matters to employees and provide training on financial applications ie. Technology One to build financial literacy of Council employees.
- Produce regular and ad hoc reports as required.
- Supervise, mentor and train team members, as and when required and relieve in other finance positions as required.
- Be engaged in an effective and proactive health, safety and wellbeing culture.
- Any other reasonable duties delegated by the Manager, which are within level.
