Retail Technology is responsible for the world-leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of CommBank and Bankwest Retail - from innovative product platforms for our customers, to essential tools within our business. We also use technology to drive simplicity and better banking, an essential component of great customer service underpinning a strong emphasis on software development as a craft and the adoption of industry best engineering practices.

You’ll be part of the Everyday Products crew, which sits within the Retail Technology – Everyday Banking team. Specifically you’ll be responsible for developing and owning the technology estate that underpins our retail transaction, debit and retail FX products to deliver simple, innovative and leading customer experiences.
As a Staff Systems Engineer in Deposits, Pricing & Governance Crew, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the stability, security, and efficiency of our technology estate. This estate spans mainframe applications, core systems, APIs / Microservices, and channel applications. You will be responsible for building and executing on the strategy to modernise our legacy estate. Your expertise in solution design, DevSecOps, resilience, and risk management will be crucial in safeguarding our operations and adhering to regulatory controls.
We support our people with the flexibility to balance where work is done with at least half your time each month connecting in office. We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Manage and support mainframe systems running Cobol and assembler code, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Collaborate with Everyday Banking Squads to maintain and enhance banking applications supporting Savings, Transaction and Deposit products.
  • Drive the migration of legacy applications to cloud, optimizing performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement resilience strategies, including disaster recovery plans and failover mechanisms, to minimize downtime and data loss.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement controls to mitigate security threats, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry best practices, identifying opportunities for innovation and process enhancement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, security, and compliance, to address system-related issues and drive strategic initiatives.
Tech Skills:
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Proven experience in mainframe systems administration, with expertise in Cobol and assembler programming languages.
  • Strong proficiency in AWS cloud services, with hands-on experience in deploying and managing applications in a cloud environment.
  • Solid understanding of banking applications and financial systems, including transaction processing and data management.
  • Knowledge of resilience principles and practices, with experience in designing and implementing disaster recovery solutions.
  • Familiarity with risk management frameworks and regulatory requirements in the banking industry.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues independently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
