Advertised Vacancy Number IPS/SS892862

Appointment Pool

Ocean Reef Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool Student Support Officers for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.

The Student Support Officer will work as part of the Learning Support Team to support our students with diagnosed conditions, successfully using their knowledge of research-based strategies to support students with complex conditions and comorbidities, including mental health diagnoses.

The Student Support Officer, under the guidance of the Head of Learning Support and the Student Support Coordinator, will develop and implement support systems and intervention strategies to assist students, their families, and staff. The officer will facilitate both individual and group interventions and will strive to establish and sustain connections between students, families, the school, and community agencies, fostering partnerships with both governmental and non-governmental organisations. Additionally, the role involves providing pastoral care, promoting an environment that encourages regular student attendance and academic success, and managing a variety of administrative tasks and student-centered activities, including organising support groups and coordinating lunchtime activities.

Strong computer skills are highly desirable, particularly proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to utilise Department of Education databases for maintaining records on student attendance, behaviour, and other metrics. The role demands excellent organisational skills, the capacity to work independently and proactively, and the ability to establish positive relationships with all school stakeholders.

Applicants with qualifications in education, social work, psychology, or a related field, as well as experience in educational support, counselling, or child welfare services, are highly regarded, though not essential.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
  • Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities within timelines.
  • Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
  • Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
  • Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

Applications will be assessed against these work related requirements (selection criteria) of the position. The business needs of the school may also be considered. It is therefore recommended that you consider all information contained in the advertisement and any other related information before applying for the vacancy.

The Department is an equal opportunity employer and encourages people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and persons from culturally diverse backgrounds to apply.
