Appointment Pool
Ocean Reef Senior High School (SHS) is seeking to establish a pool Student Support Officers for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 2, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 2, 2025.
The Student Support Officer will work as part of the Learning Support Team to support our students with diagnosed conditions, successfully using their knowledge of research-based strategies to support students with complex conditions and comorbidities, including mental health diagnoses.
The Student Support Officer, under the guidance of the Head of Learning Support and the Student Support Coordinator, will develop and implement support systems and intervention strategies to assist students, their families, and staff. The officer will facilitate both individual and group interventions and will strive to establish and sustain connections between students, families, the school, and community agencies, fostering partnerships with both governmental and non-governmental organisations. Additionally, the role involves providing pastoral care, promoting an environment that encourages regular student attendance and academic success, and managing a variety of administrative tasks and student-centered activities, including organising support groups and coordinating lunchtime activities.
Strong computer skills are highly desirable, particularly proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to utilise Department of Education databases for maintaining records on student attendance, behaviour, and other metrics. The role demands excellent organisational skills, the capacity to work independently and proactively, and the ability to establish positive relationships with all school stakeholders.
Applicants with qualifications in education, social work, psychology, or a related field, as well as experience in educational support, counselling, or child welfare services, are highly regarded, though not essential.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
- Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
- Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities within timelines.
- Good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
- Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
- Knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.

Eligibility and training requirements
Employees will be required to:
- provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
- consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
- obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
- complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
- complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
- complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
- complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
