Sunbury Downs College is a vibrant Year 7 to 12 co-educational secondary college situated in the regional town of Sunbury. It is a growing co-educational secondary college with student enrolment numbers around 600

The College offers a rich educational experience in an environment with excellent educational outcomes, high expectation and strong student management. The College regards itself as an academic school with a wide range of programs. There is a strong emphasis on core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Physical Education; complemented by programs in the Arts/Technology, Performing Arts, Health and Languages (Italian). The school also offers a range of VCE subjects, including some VETiS studies and a structured, rigorous VCAL program in Years 10-12. Sunbury Downs College prides itself on having a reputation for helping students achieve outstanding VCE results, showing that students have the `Confidence to Achieve¿.

The College offers an Accelerated Curriculum and Enrichment (ACE) program, extending students through a challenging curriculum including early commencement of VCE. The ACE program is a select entry course with enrolment from the feeder primary schools, for students in Years 7-9. The College also offers a Scholars program for students in Years 10 and 11 to provide students with a range of opportunities in the Later Years. The College is an accredited International Student Program provider.

Sunbury Downs College offers a wide range of inclusive activities and programs which cater to all students in Years 7-12. Some of these include Debating and Public Speaking, Maths Club, Drama Club and Choir. The College also has a House and Sports program with whole school carnivals for Athletics and Swimming. There are Year Level and specialised camps and excursions, including a bi-annual overseas Italian Study Tour. The College has a well-established Student Voice program with an enthusiastic Student Voice and Captaincy team. The College offers instrumental music tuition and presents a highly acclaimed Musical Production, enabling students to excel in the Performing Arts in an environment that fosters participation, responsibility and teamwork outside the classroom.

Sunbury Downs College is proud to be in partnership with its community with local organisations and agencies providing support for its students. Some of these partnerships include feeder schools, local businesses and many universities, including the University of Melbourne. The school acknowledges that it is the links with the outside world that extends the offerings for students and community.

Sunbury Downs Secondary College currently has a leadership profile consisting of Principal, 3 Assistant Principals, 5 Leading Teachers and 3 Learning Specialists. There are approximately 55 classroom teachers, 4 Paraprofessionals and 26 Education Support staff. The Student Family Occupation Education (SFOE) index is 0.4091 in 2020.

Selection Criteria

KSC 1. Demonstrated high level knowledge of relevant policy context, evidence based approaches, programs and research relating to child and adolescent health and development.

KSC 2. A demonstrated capacity to effectively implement and manage intervention strategies that address advanced and complex cases including critical incidents and those involving cross-profession or agency collaboration

KSC 3. Demonstrated high level organisational, communication and inter-personal skills including the ability to work effectively with children and young people, parents/carers and teachers as well as professionals in the education and health systems

KSC 4. Demonstrated capacity to successfully develop, lead and manage programs in a blended learning environment that meet the identified needs of vulnerable students and parents/carers

KSC 5. A demonstrated capacity to deliver professional learning to teachers and a commitment to ongoing professional learning in order to enhance Student Wellbeing in a school setting

Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions.  Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions, subject to the size and complexity of school operations. 

Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal.  Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school.  Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.

Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.  Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities

[Enter Free Text Description here]The Student Wellbeing Co-ordinator will be a member of the Inclusion Team at Sunbury Downs College and accountable to the Principal through the Assistant Principal. Student Engagement and Wellbeing.

The role has a prevention and early intervention focus which involves student counselling, developing engagement programs for students 'at risk', and establishing community links and partnerships. The Student Wellbeing Co-ordinator is responsible for building strong engagement and support programs and maintaining effective links with outside agencies. The Co-ordinator oversees the 'Student Services - Wellbeing Team' which includes: Youth Worker, Mental Health Practitioner, DET nurse and Chaplaincy Service and develops programs that foster improved outcomes in line with the College Strategic Plan.

Duties and responsibilities of the role include but not restricted to:

  • counselling
  • building positive relationships with the students
  • be able to assess risk to Student Wellbeing including crisis management and risk assessments
  • case management of students
  • be able to liaise effectively with students, teacher, parents/carers, staff and non school based agencies complying at all times with professional guidelines and confidentiality
  • co-ordinate and manage programs including the development, implementation and the ability to lead programs, dealing with social skills, assertiveness and self esteem
  • promote network and develop/implement regional programs that assist students in their pathways beyond study at Sunbury Downs College
  • provide behaviour and wellbeing support
  • manage and oversee the operations of the Student Wellbeing Team which includes youth officer, mental health practitioner, DET nurse, Chaplaincy Service
  • implement and provide professional development as applicable to promote Student Wellbeing and Inclusion.
Who May Apply

A tertiary qualification in an Allied Health field (social work/youth work/mental health/psychology) or a related field is mandatory.
