We are looking for a Superintendent Materials Handling to take accountability for the diverse range of materials required to make Alumina at our Yarwun Refinery. You will lead four crews and have a total of around 45 reports (direct and in-direct) so we are looking for a strong, collaborative leader with a relentless drive for safety whom is committed to creating a high-performing culture.
This role is a great opportunity for an experienced leader with a drive for continuous improvement, a passion for people and has exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Reporting to the Manager – Utilities and working in a diverse team, some of your responsibilities will include:
- Accountable for the overall safety performance of the Materials Handling team
- Accountable for Materials Handling environmental and regulatory compliance and reporting requirements.
- Leadership of four production crews, and Materials Handling production support team. Accountable for identifying and supporting training and development needs for team members.
- Provide coaching to team members on daily routines and rituals, including shift start meetings and in-field safety interactions.
- Accountable for safe delivery and execution of schedules pertaining to materials accountable in area.
- Accountable for development and managing annual area budget.
- Collaborates with maintenance counterpart to ensure timely delivery of maintenance tasks on area assets and infrastructure.
- Collaborates closely with other key customers in the value chain (shipping, Utilities production, technical) to support safe execution of Refinery plan.

Where you’ll be working
With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.
Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
