About the role:

This position is responsible for creating, coordinating and driving the achievement of the sustainability strategy.  This person will achieve this by: 

  • leading and coordinating work with cross functional teams 
  • working with key subject matter experts 
  • working with department leads across the business on initiatives  
  • working with external stakeholders (i.e. RBA) and consultants where required.     

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for sustainability matters.
  • Develop the annual sustainability strategy and detailed action plan.  This includes the implementation timeline,  evaluation of sustainability strategies, programs and projects.
  • Lead for creating Sustainability policies and procedures across business
  • Identify opportunities for reducing packaging waste and promoting an environmentally conscious supply chain 
  • Coordinate and drive the Sustainability plan and tasks at NPA ((i.e. status meetings, clarifying work plans, monitoring etc)
  • Support company’s recycling processes and procedures, including for e-waste, spares and consumables recycling, destruction records etc
  • Monitor waste streams and identify opportunities for waste diversion 
  • Assist in identifying and implementing energy-efficient technologies and other opportunities to minimise the use of resources (energy, water, waste) 
  • Coordinate and participate in Sustainability activities across internal departments / teams (i.e. including engineering, maintenance, production, finance, risk)  
  • Liaise with subject matter expert to ensure plans and tangible progress is made on sustainability, this includes engagement with ESG consultants  (i.e. work could include understanding carbon footprint for passports, banknotes, other customers)
  • Collect and/or validate data across from the business to ensure that it can be used for reporting this includes but is not limited to Energy & gas usage, diversion from landfill, carbon emissions etc 
  • Create sustainability scorecard and reporting for internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Provide written Sustainability updates to the NPA Board
  • Attend and contribute to steering committees and work programs run by the RBA 
  • Own selected sustainability actions and ensure they are implemented in the business 
  • Foster a culture of sustainability within the business. 
  • Liaise with all external stakeholders such as the RBA, Suppliers and Consultants to implement sustainability plans 
  • Validate the tracking of waste streams and energy usage and oversee and drive improvements in the underlying processes 
  • Coach, develop and mentor sustainability project team members 
  • Support Finance, Risk and Communications departments with information and guidance to support any voluntary and legislated disclosures regarding sustainability.
  • Assisting with TCFD reporting and inputs into carbon emissions calcs
  • Work with procurement to ensure sustainability practices are incorporated and we monitor our suppliers sustainability activities.  This includes sustainability criteria for capex (i.e. from the extra waste project packaging brings, energy consumption of new machinery, end of life disposal of equipment). 
  • Communicate sustainability achievements, goals, and initiatives to employees customers and suppliers.
  • Staff Education on Sustainability including developing and delivering training programs to educate employees about manufacturing sustainability best practices. 
  • Support Strategy and Business excellence initiatives on an adhoc basis. 
  • Other tasks and duties as advised

About you:

  • Experience supporting the development and implementation of sustainability policy and practice or strong knowledge of Environmental policies & measurement  
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams in a collaborative environment to drive sustainability outcomes across an organisation 
  • Experience taking accountability within ambiguous and uncertain business environments to drive change and deliver business and sustainability outcomes. 
  • Sustainability related data analysis and reporting skills. 
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with excellent communication and presentation skills  
  • Pragmatic approach to driving change while taking accountability for actions and outcome/results orientated
  • Proven project management experience successfully delivering sustainability projects in an organized and timely manner.
  • A high level of communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to positively engage and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Degree in natural resource management, environmental science, sustainability or a relevant tertiary qualification
  • Good analytical skills and numerical aptitude
