About the role:The City is seeking to appoint an experienced and self-motivated Sustainability Project Officer on a two-year fixed term contract. Reporting to the Sustainability Coordinator within the Strategic Planning and City Design team, you will work to develop strategy and policy aligned with Council’s vision of a sustainable and Net Zero City.The Sustainability Project Officer is responsible for supporting the preparation of the City’s environmental sustainability strategies and policies, and implementing projects and initiatives that enable the City and broader community to operate in a sustainable manner.Managing and working on all aspects of environmental sustainability strategy and projects, including research, data monitoring, technical report writing, and strategy development, to deliver the City’s sustainability agenda.The role requires a sound knowledge of contemporary sustainability and climate change issues, and potential responses in a local government context. This includes providing specialist sustainability advice, managing and implementing projects, engaging with the community and writing reports on sustainability and related matters. Specifically, the role will assist with a range of sustainability matters, including but not limited to climate change mitigation and adaptation, coastal planning, sustainable built design, corporate sustainability performance, monitoring and reporting, stakeholder engagement, and/or urban mobility and active transport.The ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and the organisation is a must, and local government experience is helpful. Applicants are required to have a degree or postgraduate diploma in sustainability or equivalent in a related field. Key responsibilities include:Assist in the preparation of sustainability strategies and policy to deliver the City’s sustainability agenda.Assist in the preparation of a climate change framework to address risks, mitigation opportunities and adaptation responses.Monitor, evaluate and report on the City’s corporate sustainability performance and/or greenhouse gas emissions.Advise on environmental sustainable design (ESD) within strategic planning and urban design.Manage projects including the preparation of scoping and reporting as well as the coordination of consultants, budgets, scheduling and stakeholder input.Advise on and coordinate initiatives related to transport, urban and e-mobility.Coordinate project tasks across multi-disciplinary groups to implement strategies and report on progress.Provide specialist advice on sustainability issues and solutions.Advocate sustainability across City initiatives and programs to improve awareness of sustainability requirements.Research and report on current and future needs within the LGA to inform strategic planning. Work across the organisation and with external stakeholders to engage, influence and build relationships to achieve outcomes.Represent the City through attendance at Council and other meetings, seminars and working groups as required. Prepare funding applications and supporting documentation.Contribute to the development of other plans, projects and policies as directed.Apply best practice, standards and legislation relevant to sustainability in local government. About you:To be considered for this position, you will need:Tertiary qualification in sustainability, environmental sciences, environmental planning, environmental engineering or a related field.Detailed knowledge of sustainability and climate change matters, including strategy and policy development.Demonstrable critical thinking and analytical skills with the ability to problem solve in novel contexts.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary groups and coordinate input from, and engage with, a range of stakeholders. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.Demonstrated experience in effective research methodologies and reporting.
