This is a permanent full-time position commencing in Term 3, 2024

Exciting opportunity to teach as a part of our exceptional English Department in Western Australia’s beautiful Pilbara region

Teachers and school administrators employed at Hedland Senior High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $10,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.

Hedland Senior High School (SHS) are seeking to appoint a Career Practitioner, a specialist teacher who will support the career development of students. Their focus will be to encourage student aspirations and connect them to life opportunities.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for teachers with an interest in student career pathways. Our Career Practitioner will work with the school leadership team and embed career development and work exposure activities into curricular and co-curricular programs. The successful candidate may also have an opportunity to lead the Vocational Education and Training (VET) TEAM as the Level 3 Program Coordinator of VET in the future.

Our Career Practitioners will be innovative and have the ability to work collaboratively across the school and with our local Industry Partners. They will implement programs, Career Taster Excursions, arrange local industry career guest speakers visits and provide resources to embed career development across learning areas. We are looking for a teacher that enjoys working with students to help them imagine and connect with their future career aspirations. Confidence to make decisions and enact necessary curriculum reform will be highly desirable attributes for the role. Teachers in this specialist role should be competent in the interpretation and analysis of system and school-based data.

The Ideal Teacher

To be competitive for this role, a high level of knowledge about the diversity of career pathways, with an understanding of school contexts in relation to local employers, community agencies and training providers is desirable. Career Practitioners should also have strong communication skills and should be able to liaise with and share information easily with students, staff, parents, training providers, employers and industry.

If you don’t hold a recognised Graduate Certificate in Career Development, you will ideally be willing to complete a qualification - which will be funded by the Department. Time will be made available for the successful applicant to complete the qualification and study will be incorporated into the role in the first 12 months. If you already hold an equivalent qualification, recognition of prior learning may be possible.

The successful applicant appointed to the Career Practitioner position will be required to complete a Graduate Certificate in Career Development if you don’t already hold one.

We will consider an internal secondment opportunity for permanent teachers in other locations within the Department of Education who would like to work at our school for up to three years and retain their substantive position. If this interests you, please gain the approval of your principal before applying.

In the first instance, only applicants with teaching qualifications will be considered. Where there are no suitable applicants with teaching qualifications, applicants without teaching qualifications may be considered.
