Meekatharra District High School (DHS) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Health and Physical Education teacher to join their school.

You may be eligible for HELP/HECS assistance if you are working in a very remote location –
Teachers and school administrators employed at Meekatharra District High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an of $17,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure). Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year. Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.
The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school.
The Ideal Teacher
The successful applicant will ideally be highly motivated, innovative, and enthusiastic in the promotion of Physical Education and Health within the school and have a keen interest in the coordination and organisation of school sporting events. They will be well organised and committed to developing positive relationships and high expectations for all students. Current knowledge and competency in the Physical and Health Education component of the Western Australian Curriculum and reporting schedule is highly regarded.
The successful applicant will have the ability to work collaboratively within a busy team environment and have the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to our school community. We are seeking a highly effective educator who has a deep understanding of and experience with a diverse range of student learning needs and styles, with a capacity to inspire students to achieve to their potential.
The successful applicant will be responsible to establish and develop an exciting new Bike Education program across the school.
Our school
Meekatharra DHS is located approximately 800 kilometres northeast of Perth. The school draws from a diverse population of around 1,000 locally and 2,100 district-wide, representing Aboriginal communities, pastoral, mining and related service industries. The town of Meekatharra is renowned for its beautiful day time vistas, hot summer temperatures and spectacular sunsets.
Meekatharra DHS caters for kindergarten to Year 12 students and has a total enrolment of 160 students, the majority being primary aged students. There is a large Aboriginal population in the town. This results in over 92% of students at Meekatharra District High School coming from Aboriginal families.
Our school values positive community relationships, including those with families, community organisations, educational institutions and local industry. We foster positive relationships with key stakeholders through active communication with families to encourage participation in school events. Positive, trusting relationships are at the heart of everything we do here at Meekatharra for our students and staff alike. The location and community
While having the option to explore the amazing countryside and waterholes locally during the weekend, Geraldton and Karijini are just a drive away and staff may drive to Perth for a long weekend or school holidays. The town has excellent facilities including a swimming pool, gym, squash courts, oval, Post Office, IGA, chemist, hospital, caravan park, museum, three pubs, three roadhouses, a golf club, rifle club and an airport with commercial flights run by Skipper’s Aviation. Most government housing is on one street, so a close-knit community has developed amongst the staff and a real sense of belonging exists.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • Complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.
