The key duties of the position include
Our team
Geoscience Australia, is operating a national positioning capability that enables government, business and academia to access the positioning data and services required to solve key science questions and drive innovation.
As a member of the GNSS Infrastructure and Informatics Section you will be at the forefront of developing and operating world-class positioning infrastructure across the region.
More broadly, the Section is responsible for the provision of accurate and reliable positioning data and services to support a location enabled Australia. We do this through the operation of a regional network of positioning infrastructure and digital platofrms.

The roles
There are two immediate vaccanices to fill, as identified below. We are also seeking to establish a merit pool to fill future positions.
Applicants can specifiy whether they want to be considered for one or both of the roles. These roles will be offered on either an ongoing or non-ongoing basis.
As the Technical Officer responsible for Pacific Geodetic Infrastructure you will support the modernisation and operation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference stations across thirteen Pacifc Island Countries. A key part of this role will be working closely with partners from the Pacific Community (SPC) to further develop local capacity to support ongoing operations. This will involve the transfer of technical knowledge and skills through the delivery of in-country training.
As the Technical Officer responsible for the National Positioning Infrastructure you will support the operation and enhancement of a 200 station Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference station network. A key part of this role will be aligning with our operational frameworks and applying effective change management and incident response to ensure our performance measures are met.
In these roles you will:
- Provide key operational and project management support in maintaining GNSS reference stations across Australia, Antarctica, and the Pacific.
- Engage and collaborate with key stakeholders to respond to, and resolve technical issues promptly, maintaining service standards, including network availability and reliability.
- Plan and lead technical missions to modernise equipment and address stations issues, while fostering productive working relationships with all partners.
- Develop, review, and maintain technical documentation, including work instructions, technical specifications, site and asset records, commissioning reports, schematics, change requests, contract and procurement documentation.
- Lead projects to further develop, modernise and improve the positioning infrastructure, effectively leveraging consultant, contractor, and partner support for design, implementation and review.
- Perform the configuration, testing and security hardening of equipment as part of planned infrastructure upgrades and as supported by a change management process.
- Demonstrate leadership in safety by adhering to and improving work practices, ensuring fieldwork and operations prioritise the well-being of technical teams and site personnel.
- Prepare and provide advice, information, and support on GNSS infrastructure to a diverse range of stakeholders, including project partners, committees, and working groups.
- Support field operations by building and delivering capacity, coordinating and managing contractors and other specialist service providers or resources where required, whilst ensuring WHS maturity.
- Contribute to the positive team culture through continuous delivery, development, agility and stakeholder engagement.

- Work under limited direction to establish clear project plans; continually review project performance and respond flexibly to changing demands whilst working towards successful delivery against agreed milestones; cope effectively in an environment characterised by change.
- Demonstrate strong technical leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills and work effectively to identify, prioritise, solve and communicate issues in a time-sensitive manner
- Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member; consult and share information within the team and seek input from others; consult other team members prior to making decisions that affect them; ensure people are kept informed of progress and issues.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and experiences; confidently present and tailor technical information in both written and oral form to a range of audiences.
- Support section management and actively contribute to and foster an inclusive culture within the team; Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical, and professional manner.
Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
- Fieldwork experience, and a willingness to travel to and work in remote areas.
- Demonstrated project management, procurement and contract management capability, with experience in coordinating the use of specialist service providers, including contractors and consultants (desirable).
- Technical qualifications in electrical or systems engineering, electronics and communications, or equivalent expertise in an operational setting, or experience in accessing, operating and maintaining remote infrastructure and instrumentation (desirable)
