The School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience (SCMB) teaches and conducts research in Biomedical Sciences including Biochemistry, Molecular Biophysics, Microbiology and Cell and Molecular Biology, and all disciplines of Chemistry. SCMB staff have global research connections providing multi-faceted opportunities for knowledge growth and development.
The Technical Specialist oversees the management and operation of the first-year Chemistry teaching laboratory to support undergraduate teaching courses and laboratory focused outreach activities. This role has a strong WHS focus and you will take a leading role in compliance and WHS requirements in the first year laboratory. As part of a larger technical team, you will also be required to support other chemistry practical lessons.
We are seeking a qualified candidate with a degree in Chemistry or Science, majoring in Chemistry with relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education/training. You will have extensive expertise in chemical principles and laboratory techniques including equipment/instrument use, maintenance and repair as well as the development of documentation systems related to these activities. Your ability to implement and uphold WHS guidelines in laboratory settings is critical in this role. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for effectively conveying information to diverse audiences. Additionally, you will have experience in forward planning and prioritising tasks to meet deadlines in a busy environment and be proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs. Familiarity with the Australian higher education sector and prior experience in a tertiary education chemistry laboratory will be highly regarded.

Special Job Requirements:
- You will be required to work outside standard business hours or additional hours depending on operational needs of the work unit. As per UOW Professional Staff Enterprise Agreement Technical staff span of hours are: Mon – Fri; 8am – 10:15pm, and Saturday 8am – 12pm.
- Chemical and manual handling (heavy lifting or sharps handling) in a risk-controlled environment will be a part of this role.
