The Opportunity

The School of Computer Science Engineering has an opening for a Technical User Laboratory and Systems Engineer. You will provide operational support and coordination to design and facilitate systems uses for client projects, and technologies in a user and experimentation lab, equipped with Cisco Webex devices, Cisco Spaces, support tools and software engineering stack, video wall, mmWave radar sensing, wearable sensing, AR/VR headsets, and CPU and GPU supporting the operation of the lab. The role will support staff and students working on R&D applications in relation to next generation AI (MFMs & LLMs), human behaviour sensing, wearable computing, cyber-physical systems, digital twins, and human-robot interaction.

This role reports to Professor Flora Salim and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level 8: Starting at $118,883 per annum + 17% superannuation

  • Fixed term – 12 months
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills and Experience

  • Degree and subsequent relevant experience in computer science, IT systems, or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
  • Experience and application of IT systems principles and the ability to derive and document business insights from them.
  • Ability to innovate and take responsibility for outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and monitor workflows within the area of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating activities including information synthesis and documentation of insights.
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Experience and success in coordinating people and supporting researcher activities such as user studies and data collection.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and techniques.
  • Ability to quickly integrate new learnings into operational practices.
  • Demonstrated conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to undertake analysis and development tasks.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with the ability to use a variety of software packages.
  • Experience with visualisation – including AR and VR, and with content management for video walls.
  • Experience with R, Python programming;
  • Network engineering principles, including know-how of switching including VLAN Configuration or IP Addressing as required.
  • Knowledge of principles of full stack software engineering and machine learning development.
  • Knowledge of ethics-approval process and experience in overseeing ethics approved user studies.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-awareness, see things from another person’s perspective and actively seek out and act on feedback to improve knowledge, skills, and behaviour.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, recognise the value of diversity and model accountability, connectedness, innovation, and care.
  • Ability to think creatively, explore new ideas and respectfully challenge existing practices to improve current ways of working.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
