Casual Assistant Border Force Officers (ABFOs) are employed at APS Level 2 to work across fast-paced and high volume working domains, to alleviate pressure on existing teams. Casual ABFOs undertake a range of routine transactional and administrative operational support tasks.

Casual ABFOs predominately work in International Airports however may undertake a variety of tasks across frontline operational work areas within the ABF including, but not limited to the following areas of deployment:

  • Melbourne, Hobart & Avalon International Airport
  • Air Cargo Operations
  • Detained goods management
  • Melbourne Gateway Facility
  • Maritime operations
  • Container Examination Facility
  • Regional Operations
  • District office Operations.

These are frontline roles that require officers to wear the ABF uniform and represent the ABF professionally in the public domain. Officers must be capable of interacting with members of the community and foreign visitors.

Shift work may be required.

Our ideal candidate

The ABF is currently looking for flexible, adaptable and reliable people to undertake work on a Casual basis at the APS 2 classification.

You will be given the necessary training, to perform work related functions such as passenger clearances. Training is approximately four to six weeks in duration and is undertaken on a full-time basis. Please note you must be flexible and available to attend training for the full course.

Duties and responsibilities

In the ABF, we are looking for Assistant Border Force Officers who can:

  • Work collaboratively as an effective team member to achieve work area objectives
  • Contribute to team workflow and outputs against team objectives
  • Participate in and support a culture of achievement, sharing own skills and capabilities with colleagues and others
  • Commit to developing their skills and knowledge
  • Represent the ABF in frontline operational areas, dealing directly with members of the public including foreign travellers
  • Are professional and respectful
  • Perform duties in a fast-paced, high volume operating environment
  • Be flexible and adaptable
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • General administrative support
  • Basic computer skills are essential.

Additional information

The following requirements apply to the position:

  • Wear the ABF uniform
  • Attain and maintain mandatory training requirements
  • Attain and maintain relevant security requirement.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting  (AGSVA) security clearance and an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).

The Department may provide relocation assistance to eligible APS employees required to relocate. The level of assistance will vary depending on the reason for relocating and your personal circumstances. For further information please enquire with the contact officer listed in the advertisement.
