IPA is very pleased to be partnering with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to build upon their fabulous team located here in Cairns. There are currently two (2) TO2 positions vacant in the Cairns team.
Working within Fishery Queensland's Fishery Monitoring team, you will be assisting the routine monitoring of priority fishery species, mainly focused on the coastal region north of Sarina to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Candidates should be familiar with techniques used for collecting biological data for routine monitoring of fish stocks.
As part of this opportunity, the successful candidate will be required to perform the following:
- Work as part of a state-wide operational team undertaking fisheries monitoring
- Read, understand and adhere to sampling protocols and SOP's
- Carry out routine collection of data and samples in the field, sometimes at short notice and sometimes for extended periods of time (usually several days).
- Provide detailed trip reports at the conclusion of sampling trips
- Apply high levels of scientific accuracy
- Carry out lab processing of fish samples and the processing of otoliths (fish ear bones)
- Communicate with commercial and recreational fishery stakeholders to organise sampling opportunities or follow up details of sampled catches
- Exercise tact and discretion with associates and clients
Mandatory prerequisites:
Minimum of Associate Diploma in Science, Applied Science or Rural Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualification, and a current C-Class driver's licence.
Highly Desirable
- Experience in scientific data collection
- Experience in conducting fisheries-type surveys (lab and field work) and data handling.
- Current first aid training
- Elements of shipboard safety certification
- Coxswains or restricted coxswains ticket
- A good understanding of Office 365 productivity applications e.g. Teams, Planner etc.
- The ability to travel away from home for periods of up to a week or more.
- The ability to identify fisheries species commonly caught in Queensland waters.
Other details:Usual work hours are (but not limited to) Monday to Friday 36.25 hrs per week.
Hourly rate: Commencing TO2 Level $ 43.57 (casual rate, incl loading)
The initial term of engagement will be until 30 June 2024 with the opportunity for renewal. All going well, these positions are ongoing, but contracts can only be offered on a financial year basis etc.
