SalaryWetland Cruises operate 1 day tours from Darwin and regular 1.0 -2.5 hour cruises on the wetlands at Corroboree Billabong located 105 km from Darwin.
POSITION DETAILS
The guiding side of the position involves a mixture of operating our day tour from Darwin 1 day/week (including a 2.5 hour lunch cruise) and also operating all of our regular cruises for the day onsite at Corroboree Billabong (105 km from Darwin) for 2 consecutive days/week.
The sales side of the position involves visiting our local Agents 1 day/week around Darwin and Outer Darwin & 1 day/week at Mindil Beach Markets assisting operating our information stall.
We offer a regular 5 day week from Sunday to Thursday. Great pay rate available subject to applicants’ experience/ qualifications and based on 40 - 45 hours/week. The position is seasonal and would commence from mid-April through until the end of October. We provide air-conditioned accommodation for you 2 nights/week out near the cruise so you do not need to drive back to Darwin at night after operating cruises for the day. Your own transport is required but we provide fuel for you to get to the cruise location and also cover any fuel used while doing sales work required. Previous guiding experience is a definite advantage but not essential.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
The tour guiding side of the position - requires a person who is: knowledgeable on the surrounding natural environment; able to interact with the passengers in a friendly, professional manner; has a good sense of humour; able to learn and retain information provided on plants, birds, crocodiles, wildlife, geography, and other specific information about the wetlands.
The Sales side of the position - requires a person who is outgoing and can easily interact with tourists and local agents. The skills that a TOUR GUIDE generally possess will make the sales side of the position very easy.
Successful applicants should also be able to demonstrate good organisational skills, an ability to work unsupervised, honesty, reliability, and responsibility through their previous positions.
LISENCES REQUIRED
The position requires the guide to have or be willing to obtain the following licences and certificates.
- LR Drivers licence
- "H" endorsement to carry passengers - involves medical and criminal history check.
- 1st Aid certificate
- A company developed training program is required to be completed prior to operating the cruise boats and this is conducted onsite during training. Applicants with a current coxswain’s ticket will not need to do this training
MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operating 1 day tours from Darwin to Corroboree Billabong, 1 day per week. Looking after a maximum of 20 passengers and visiting highlights between Darwin and the cruise. This tour picks up passengers at 9am and drops off again at 5pm.
- Operating 4 - 5 boat cruises per day on the wetlands at Corroboree Billabong, 2 days per week. Our cruises run at 8.45, 10.00, 12.45 and 4.30pm. During peak season we also operate a 6.45am sunrise cruise. Transfers between the cruise and Corroboree Tavern are also required and operated by the guide for several cruises per day.
- Operating a stall at Mindil beach markets on Sundays each week (from 2pm – 10pm) providing information and taking reservations from tourists. Setting up and packing down a stall with display panels showing wildlife images and manning the stall during market hours.
- Visiting local and Outer Darwin Agents, 1 day per week. Making sure they have enough of our brochures and talking to any new staff about the cruises and tours that we run.
- Providing information to passengers during the 1 day tours from Darwin and also when operating cruises. We want people to leave having had a wonderful experience and recommending us to other travellers. We like our guides to provide a good balance of interesting information along with having a bit of fun so the cruises are light hearted.
- Performing basic duties on tour vehicles and boat. This involves checking oil & water levels, checking tyres, filling in vehicle/boat log books, refuelling boat fuel tanks & tour vehicles, cleaning vehicles and boat when required.
- Collecting receipts and vouchers, money handling, checking all passengers are on manifests and everyone is accounted for before leaving.
- Adding passenger details to manifests so they are correct before shuttles and cruises departures
