Rail Operations supports the delivery of safe, reliable, customer-focused rail services across Australia's largest and most complex suburban network.

We aim to improve the reliability and resilience of the network with an integrated approach to operational planning; and by delivering controlled, reliable, consistent and seamless day of operations services.

The opportunity

Right now, we have opportunities for Trainee Train Signaller's to join our Rail Operations Team. The role is fixed term, full-time for 12 months.

Signallers are responsible for the control and supervision of train, locomotive and traffic movements. They make decisions about when to prioritise and allocate access for track maintenance to maintain the safe and efficient running of our network.

This is a fast-paced job that will require you to problem-solve and make quick decisions when issues arise. When they do, its important signallers can communicate clearly with their team and other contacts to effectively handle any situation.

As a Trainee Signaller, you'll learn about the technical and non-technical skills required to work in Operations Control. In your training you'll cover reading and understanding the Sydney Trains Safe working Rules and operating the signal box panel. Valuable non-technical skills include clear and effective communication, being able to work under pressure, problem solving, prioritising actions, remaining alert, maintaining safe operations, anticipating, and managing risks.

What does the Training Program involve?

Trainees complete a traineeship with Sydney Trains where you receive a combination of classroom and on-the-job training for up to 20 weeks.

Our on-the-job training will give you exposure to a variety of signal boxes including Penrith, St Marys, Clyde, Waterfall, Campbelltown, Gosford, Wyong, Broadmeadow, Blacktown, Wollongong, Lithgow and the Rail Operation Centre (Alexandria). Please note that the business will endeavour to take your home location into consideration when allocating training locations, however due to training being held at various locations you will need to be flexible and may experience increased travel times during the course of training.

On completion of the training, you will be qualified Signaller, moving to a fixed location at the end of the traineeship. Sydney Trains will endeavour to take location preferences into account, however locations at time will be based on operational requirements.

About you

In order to perform this critical role within Sydney Trains you will need to demonstrate:
  • Good spatial awareness and strong mathematical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • The ability to work under pressure and make quick, accurate decisions
  • The capability to plan ahead, as well as adapt to changing situations
  • Be willing to do shift work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year rotating roster including weekends, nights and public holidays
  • You are able to attend training for a period of up to 20 weeks across various locations in the Greater Sydney area
  • Having a Drivers licence and your own transport is an advantage as not all work locations are close to public transport and shift start/finish times at times do not align with available public transport
  • Meet compulsory medical and pre employment checks required
Salary and benefits
  • Rostered 5 weeks Annual Leave

  • Potential for those successful in the Traineeship to secure permanent ongoing roles at the end of the duration
The pay for this position is $1,167.55 per week plus additional allowances, leave loading and superannuation.
