The Opportunity

The UNSW Energy Institute has an opportunity for a Manager to manage the operations of the institute. You will work closely with the CEO to support the institute’s strategic direction by developing operational plans, liaising with key stakeholders, and monitoring and reporting. This role will also provide operational and high-level administrative support to the CEO and Board as required.

This role reports to the CEO of the UNSW Energy Institute, Dani Alexander, and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level 8/9 - $118,883 to $146,613 per annum + 17% superannuation (pro-rated to 0.6 FTE)
  • Part time – 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE)
  • Fixed-term contract – 36 months
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia
  • Hybrid/Flexible working arrangements

Skills & Experience

Level 8

  • A relevant degree with substantial knowledge and experience gained through a combination of relevant education, training and/or experience.
  • Experience in the energy sector will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in executive support to senior management, preferably in a large and complex institution.
  • Strong ability to manage workflow effectively in a dynamic and fast-changing environment, with superior time management, problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Proven skills in resource planning and analysis at strategic and operational levels.
  • Demonstrated success in fostering partnerships and engagement with research institutes and industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating content development for promotional material, web content, official communications and reports.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication and consultation skills, including an ability to exercise initiative, tact and discretion in dealing with sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Level 9 (in addition to the above)

  • Postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Proven skills and experience in strategic and resource planning, negotiation, goal setting and project or program management.
  • Proven leadership skills and significant experience in a research environment with a strong understanding of research funding sources, schemes and grants, and the research regulatory and policy environment including grant funding rules.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse, interpret and integrate complex data and provide strategic direction and analysis to senior management.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and writing business cases and/or strategic position or policy papers for industry, government and external end user partner audiences.
  • Extensive understanding industry and university policies and procedures around the management of research and research finance.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and problem solving in complex settings with the ability to provide sound strategic advice, develop and implement operational plans, policies and systems aligned to strategic objectives.
  • Proven expertise in and ability to provide professional advice related to the Institute’s priorities.
