Visiting Medical Officer – Cardiology - Zero Hours Reliever
The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District is looking for VMOs to join the Cardiology team at the Wollongong & Shellharbour Hospitals on a temporary 12-month appointment.

The primary responsibility for the position is the provision of Cardiac services at Wollongong and Shellharbour Hospitals and may be varied as agreed with the Director of Medical Services and as approved via the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC) to other facilitates in ISLHD.
This role will see the Cardiologist proactively:

  • Provide cardiac services at Wollongong Hospital and participation in the on-call general (and interventional, if appropriate) cardiology roster (including call backs for pacing wires, pericardiocentesis, urgent echocardiography).
  • Undertake inpatient and outpatient work, including procedural lists, as requested by the Director of Cardiology.
  • Provide assistance to the Director of Cardiology by undertaking on-call and clinical duties on his behalf.
  • Undertake clinical duties in a professional, timely, and responsible manner.
  • Professionally responsible for direct patient care (including inpatients, outpatients, and consultations).
  • Provide clinical supervision and teaching of undergraduate and post graduate medical staff.
  • Ensure efficient and effective communication with the patient's other health care providers, and family/carers.
  • Support and participate in cardiology services at Shellharbour Hospital.

It is the region’s tertiary referral hospital servicing a population of more than 400,000 people. The Wollongong Hospital is a 500+ bed centre which provides both general and specialty medical and surgical services including adult intensive care and coronary care units.
ISLHD is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 across eight hospital sites and community health services.

Successful applicants to the role must provide certified documentation of vaccination history and pathology as part of their recruitment documentation. The applicant must be certified as compliant with before employment can commence.
All NSW Health Category A workers are required to receive two doses of an approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine. In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the
seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant. You will be required to provide a record of your vaccination status as part of the recruitment and onboarding process.
Selection Criteria: * Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with accredited training in Cardiology and/or equivalent specialist recognition
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
  • Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
